If you really want to understand what prayer is than this is the one and only book on prayer you need. Merton deals with prayer as communion with God not communication with God, nor communication with other humans. He deals with prayer as experiencing God not just learning about him from books. Merton is still one of the best read authors on prayer, especially contemplation, by Catholics, Christians and even non-Christians especially in America. Although a Monk who died in 1960's he is still the latest word on prayer. Prayer for Merton demanded silence and focus on God not a group or formal prayer. Merton's prayer was one on one with God in which you came away with an experience of God. His prayer was union with God not just begging for stuff. A really great little book.
