Edward Hayes Plumptre was a Church of England theologian and scholar. He served in a number of posts in the Church, including the Prebendary of St Pauls (1863), Rector of Bickley (1873). In 1881 he was appointed Dean of Wells - serving until his death 10 years later. From 1869 to 74 he was a member of the Old Testament revision committee.
He wrote a significant number of works including books on theology, hymns and poems both secular and religious and his translations of the plays of Aeschylus and Sophocles were very popular. He was also produced a notable translation of Dante’s Divine Comedy.
