i'm actually reading Number 2 (i think) but it didn't show up on amazon -- a pretty good indication of the underlying agenda of this site.
there's a long speech converted to essay by clive dilnot called "design? ethics?" that makes a few proposals about how design can encompass an ethics in the process (through negotiation). i want to believe in the ideas he puts forth, but unfortunately i'm stuck on trying to find a legitimate argument for WHY design/art/practice should seek to alleviate suffering -- i understand this from a moral/religious perspective, but not from a philosophical, political or economic perspective (or design for that matter).
