Father Joseph Durkin, S.J., is a native of Philadelphia. He attended Boston College where he took an A.B. and M.A. in philosophy, and later, at Fordham University, he received his Ph.D. in history. In 1933, he was ordained a priest of the Society of Jesus, at Woodstock, Maryland.
Father Durkin has served as a professor of history in a number of colleges on the East Coast and since 1944 has been associated as professor of American history with the Graduate School and College of Georgetown University.
An expert on the Civil War period, he has, through careful scholarship, found much new matter bearing on the War and its many great men. This information has bcen published in a series of books and miscellaneous magazine articles since 1941.
