Settle into your four-wheel-drive vehicle or a chair and take off for the mining camps of Colorado! This book is an illustrated history of fifty-nine towns famous during the gold and silver rushes of the 1800s, with directions on how to get to each.
Robert Leaman Brown was a teacher of Western and Colorado history in the Denver School System for thirty-three years and later at the Denver Center of the University of Colorado. He has published a number of guide books focusing on Colorado history including Colorado On Foot (1991) and Ghost Towns of the Colorado Rockies (1968), both published by Caxton Press.
Read this as a historical perspective only. As a guide to current site or road conditions, use it only as a starting point for further investigation, of course. It was written in 1963. There may be new editions but very few towns have updates in my 2009 print and the ones that do precede the early '90s. Establishments and roads may be wiped out by nature or privatized at this point. Most directions weren't all that great anyway.
