Pull up a chair or gather 'round the campfire and get ready for thirty-four creepy tales of ghostly hauntings, eerie happenings, and other strange occurrences from times past! Virginia folklore traditions are kept alive in these expert retellings by master storyteller S.E. Schlosser and through artist Paul G. Hoffman's evocative illustrations. You'll meet ghosts and witches, hear things that go bump in the night, and feel an icy wind on the back of your neck on a warm summer evening. The stories in this entertaining and compelling collection will have you looking over your shoulder again and again.
Author S.E. Schlosser has been telling stories since she was a child, when games of "let's pretend" quickly built themselves into full-length stories. A graduate of the Institute of Children's Literature and Rutgers University, she also created and maintains the website AmericanFolklore.net, where she shares a wealth of stories from all 50 states, some dating back to the origins of America.
Overall, the stories are quite tantalizing. Full of mystery, happenstance, and some terror. There are a couple that fall flat and don't quite hit the mark, but they don't take too much away from the expectation of the book.
The illustrations in this book are excellent, and there are a lot of great stories. My personal favorites were The Horseman, Phantasie, Rupp, and The Seventh Window. Some of them felt a bit underdeveloped, mostly the ones that took place in modern day. All of the sources used by the author are cited in the back, but it's difficult to determine which source was used for which story if one wants to research them more. However, this book clearly was meant to be more entertaining than a research source, so it's not too much to the fault of the book itself.
