Dr. Turrell Verl "Terry" Wylie (Ph.D., Chinese, University of Washington, 1958) was professor of Tibetan Studies at the University of Washington, where he served as the first chair of the Department of Asian Languages and Literature and co-founder with Geshe Nawang L. Nornang of the Tibetan Studies program, the first of its kind in the U.S. The Wylie system of Tibetan transliteration is today an almost universally adopted scheme for representing the orthography of the Tibetan language in Latin characters.
