Rate this book
The Global Warning Series features the adventures of Lydia Barnes, a 14-year-old girl who travels with her widower missionary father to exciting locations around the world. In each story Lydia finds herself facing new challenges that introduce readers ages 8 through 12 to world issues and how God can make a difference as they develop a Christian worldview. This series of intrigue also addresses age-appropriate personal, social, and spiritual themes that encourage readers to depend on God in their own spiritual journey. In book one of this series, Lydia joins her father, Frank, on a trip to Liberia, Africa, and finds herself caught up in a treasure hunt with her new best friend, Ben. If they can unravel the mystery and solve all of the clues, Lydia and Ben may find the treasure desperately needed by the doctors in this war-torn country.

In this, the first book in the series, we get to know the main character Lydia as well as her dad. Lydia is a somewhat typical teen in that she is obsessed with how she looks and is excited to be meeting Ben whom she imagines to be another suave teenager. Hah! Lydia soon learns that looks don't count for everything and Ben is fast to become her best friend when she arrives in Liberia.

Underneath Lydia has a soft but broken heart. Her mom died in a plane crash when she was younger and so all she has now is her dad who has a warped sense of humor but can witness to anyone anywhere. Frank is the kind of guy who never meets a stranger. Lydia isn't sure about God. She feels that He abandoned her when her mom died. What happens to change her mind? Who is Arway and why is it so important to find Promise? What about the treasure?

Frank works for GRO (Global Relief and Outreach). He has been sent to Monrovia to help the Vanderhooks and their clinic which predominantly works with Aids patients. Going along with them is Mrs. Hinkle, Lydia's new tutor. Is she really all she says she is or is she following the two kids to try and beat them to the treasure? Mystery and danger abound as the kids try to discover not only where the treasure is hidden. What is it?

This is a GOOD story, suitable for reading aloud or allowing your independent readers to read alone. It is a stand alone story but the end does make the set up for the next book. I gave it 4 stars due to the fact that whilst mostly well-written there were a few too many "said so and so". The dialogs between the characters would have been better and a much easier read without so many "saids" as many times it was obvious who was speaking. Our kids LOVED this book and were eager to start reading Book 2. Thanks, Liz

Lydia, a teen from Indianapolis, accompanies her father, a consultant for Global Relief and Outreach, to Monrovia, Liberia, where she and Ben, the son of medical missionaries, go on a danger-filled treasure hunt that they hope will lead to diamonds. Candace started 8/07, didn't like the general disrespect and teenage attitude that Lydia portrayed. But, since it's about the Wesleyan outreach program, I'd like to give it a try again in a few years.
