Great book, and I believe it may be based on a true story. I read this book back in 1990 or 91 not long after it was first published. The story seems very real. It takes place in the early ‘70s and even the way certain phrases are used from that time are authentic to me. As well, I remember how being gay was looked at back then as opposed to the ‘90s, as opposed to now and I have to say it was spot on as far as attitudes, internal homophobia, etc. Anyway, the story has always stayed in my mind and I’ve lost or misplaced my original copy of the book and couldn’t remember the name, but another author who had been with the same publisher was kind enough to respond to an email and help me remember the title & I was able to find a used bookseller who had it. Having now reread it I really do remember how good the story was and is. I wasn’t sure if it was as good as I remembered it, but, it definitely was. Not only that, it was edited by Katherine Forrest! How could it not be good?
I bought it in 1990 because it was a wlw story from Naiad, but also because it mentions the nightlife in Calumet City (I later ran a ladies only bar in Cal City before it closed a year after I left.) I also believe Lattimore is a pen name and didn’t find any more books from her. However, I did notice the dedication to Brandy Wilde, which is the strip name of one of the MCs in the book. She, Brandy Wilde, wrote a book in 2015 about her life as a stripper. I recently ordered that through Amazon and after reading the preview I am anxiously waiting for that to arrive. I actually recognized some of the flashback scenes in this book in the preview!
Bottom line is: this is a good read on its own. It may seem dated only because it doesn’t take place even in the time period it was written but it is well written and if you can find it from a used bookstore online, it’s worth reading and adding to your collection. 5/5
This is more 2 1/2 stars than 2 but Goodreads doesn’t do half stars. I love how older books sometimes had catalogs in the back with other books u can call & buy & there were like FOUR PAGES of other lesbian fiction books from this publisher & that’s so fun.
