Her popularity in Kerala is based chiefly on her short stories and autobiography, while her oeuvre in English, written under the name Kamala Das, is noted for the poems and explicit autobiography.
Her open and honest treatment of female sexuality, free from any sense of guilt, infused her writing with power, but also marked her as an iconoclast in her generation. On 31 May 2009, aged 75, she died at a hospital in Pune. Das has earned considerable respect in recent years.
I have heard that Madhavikutty was a person who knew only to love everyone she knew. Her one close relative once told me that she was ready to go the extra mile to make anyone close to her happy. It is true she was sharp with her words when she wrote about the people in her life. But it was only the writer in her who wanted to write freely and openly. Madhavikutty, as a person, was a lovable, charming person.
Such a talented, warm person should have had a peaceful life in the latter part of their life. But, sadly, it was not the case with Madhavikutty. Some people she loved the most hurt her to the core. The society also was harsh to her, especially after the conversion of her religion.
