Tamara Small is whisked away in the dead of night—to the annual monster's ball! On a dark and windy night Tamara lies awake in bed, when she hears a noise outside her room. Suddenly she is whisked away by a hairy arm and taken to the village hall! Luckily it is just the monsters from her neighborhood inviting her to their annual ball. Touching on every childhood fear, Tamara Small can hear noises when she goes to bed one night and immediately fears the worst, except in this case, she’s right. The noises are from a monster and he’s come to take her away. But not to fear, it’s to the annual monsters ball of course!

This is Giles Paley-Phillips, who wrote the brilliant, ‘A fearsome Beastie’s latest offering. In this book, the story once again starts off scarily but the monsters are friendly and just want to have a good time dancing the night away.

I enjoy reading Giles’ books because the poem always flows nicely. Even my husband, bless his heart, as reading aloud doesn’t come naturally, can read Giles’ books with ease. His rhymes are witty and engage children to the story.

Gabriele Antonini is also back with her unique illustrative style, managing to make the monsters not too scary but still full of quirky and captivating character.

Verdict: An enjoyable book that taps into a child’s ‘love to be scared’ relationship with monsters but won’t leave them with nightmares. Instead, they might be listening out for strange noises at night and hoping that they’re the next Tamara Drew!

I absolutely love the writing, which not only rhymes, but is still understandable by my 4 years old daughter (she even started reading it herself!). There was no need to explain every sentence to her, just the odd words that she didn't understand. She was a bit frightened at first when Tamara was being kidnapped, but soon was delighted to hear that the funny monsters meant no harm.

The pictures are sharp, colourful and eye catching with really cute drawings. Abby loved the book so much she requested me to read it again! I loved the book so much I didn't mind at all.

I think this book should be added to any childrens' book collection, especially when Halloween is just around the corner!

Giles's Book is a lovely "outside" the norm picture book which is perfect for Halloween and dealing with Children's fears of Monsters.

It has laughter while allowing a child see that when they fear the unknown, more often than not, their fears can be overcome. so encouraging interaction around a bedroom when being read aloud.

A lovely book by a talented team

This is a lovely book for the younger reader about the pleasant surprises that can be found when facing your fears (and it will make parent's hearts feel a little bit squidgy)! It is suitable for year round reading and perfect for Halloween.

This was such a sweet story. I loved the ryhmes that Paley-Phillips came up with and the illustrations were quite lovely. Both of my daughters (ages 2 and 6) enjoyed it as well. I believe this story will be added to our regular bedtime rotation.

Both of my boys love this story. Monsters, rhyme, beautiful illustrations. Now he knows the story, my 5 year old reads it aloud to his 3 year old brother.
Fantastic!
