The story reads like a written juvenile Japanese anime and is often unintentionally funny

The plot had great potential. The idea of a half demon assassin who wants to leave his past behind had the promise of a quest of finding himself, of difficult moral choices and a no nonsense protagonist. Unfortunately, the story failed to deliver. There was no cultivation or character progress, no interesting overarching plot, no interesting choices or characters and no interesting enemies.
I found the world building good and liked theexotic Eastern Asian nature spirit mythology but the characters in the book felt wooden and one dimensional. Furthermore, the story failed to make the yokai as fascinating and interesting as they could have been for me..
The protagonist is dull, full of himself while tactically utterly incompetent, overly aggressive against the yokai and wimpy against the assassins ( i often had the song " do you really wanna hurt me - do you really wanna make me cry?" In my head)
Ultimately, the story was just too juvenile and dull for me to stay enganged..
Critics and comments:
The protagonist is a bizarre choice for a professional assassin. He worries about people who want to kill him and babbles out all secrets to complete strangers. I understand why his guild wants to see him dead.. Given what happens when he stubs his toe or cuts himself shaving, killing him seems like a gift to humanity..
I found it hilarious that the protagonist is supposed to have spent 2 years moving a distance of what is later revealed to be less than 10days of faster travel and thinks himself safe 😉..
Looking and behaving the same way as before and even maintaining the same hair cut is an interesting choice for an experienced assassin in hiding.. one would assume that acover story would be less conspicuous than acting mysterious and threatening..
A boomerang sword is a very stupid concept, if only due to aerodynamics.. Throwing your only weapon away hoping it won't get intercepted does not sound like a safe bet..
Taking a prisoner who stinks like manure, vomit, sweat and alcohol around for an extended bender and even to a brothel seems "kinky" to me..
The Shunta ambush is very illogical as not even Danzen knew that he would decide to go there..
It's a bit bizarre, especially given the fact that he wants to stay low key that he would wash everything but not himself and his robe in two days before returning to the town..
The ambush against the assassin trio was really amateurishly executed, totally wasting the rather unique opportunity of knowing both the skills of the enemies and the location where they intend to strike. No assassin worth one's salt would not focus on killing the most dangerous enemy who is also most likely to get away.. Moreover, why would he chose to fight them at all? The scene was really ridiculous!
I loved the concept of Yama! It's bizarre that in all the wuxia novels i read all authors ignored that typical asian guardian spirits.
The protagonist is way too aggressive towards creatures he meets as he keeps attacking intelligent creatures at first sight without checking if they are aggressive at all! I would have laughed if he had killed the girl he was supposed to save due to this idiocy..
It is quite the paradox. Danzen is constantly acting like a murder hobo against most of the nature spirits he meets but acts like a wimp towards his assassin colleagues begging them not to force to kill them repeatedly..
I swear the author only insists on permanently using the term "famed blade" to artificially increase the wocount.

I so LOVE this western cultivation series, and savoured every word. It has everything I enjoy and there's so much packed between these (nearly) 2,000 pages, that if it was a suitcase, you - and your mates - would have to sit on it to get it shut. This omnibus edition includes 30 beautiful, original and hand-drawn pieces of artwork. For a series of SEVEN books so far (the eighth comes out this year - can't wait!), the average rating has been 4.49 out of five stars on Goodreads. Excellent stuff!
This is the story of Danzen Ravja, former assassin and half-demon. When his blood flows outwit his body, it releases masses of demons. Danzen no longer wishes to follow the path of killing, he just wants to be left to live in peace. Other assassins take a different view. His powerful dad wants him to rule Diyu (the netherworld) after him. His full-demon brother strongly disagrees, and will fight Danzen to the death for the right to the throne. Danzen has no interest in it at all.
This is a high-quality read, riveting storyline and plot, excellent characters, wonderful world building, emotional and heartfelt storytelling full of lessons for us lesser beings, with lots of action, twists and surprises. Not forgetting the Yokai - I love the Yokai. Get ready for the ride of a lifetime. Enjoy!
A great boxset of Pilgrim adventures, having the first 3 together is very handy and a great deal but better yet having an insight into the authors mind by seeing actual pictures of scenes and Yokai is well worth the look. Looks like this will be the way forward as the rest of the series shall get the same treatment which I can't wait to see more of.
