Set in the beautiful country of Oman during the late seventies, a young scientist, Camar, relates about her childhood and the consolation she finds with the turtles when her mother dies. The story takes her through adventure, and the need to protect the turtles from those who threaten to endanger them. It encompasses a time of discovery in her childhood through to adulthood, and the resulting preservation of turtles that exists in Oman today.
I read this book for my stop in Oman on my Journey Around the World in 2019-2020. While it is informative about sea turtles, it is written more on an elementary level. I was a bit disappointed with that. Also, it was written as if it were a memoir or true life story, yet the author said right in the front of the cover that it was a work of fiction. That took away all meaning for me. Sorry.
All that is left once the relevance is gone is a tale woven from an encyclopedia entrance on turtles. I do not feel it is worth reading. I wish that I had found something more relevant. I will have to revisit the world of Oman, since it sounds quite beautiful and idyllic in this short tale. I had to order the paperback from Amazon, since it is not obtainable neither in hardback, locally, nor digitally.
My next stop is Iran, where I will be reading a more embroiled history in Iran Rising: The Survival and Future of the Islamic Republic by Amin Saikal.
