I previously read Developments in French Politics as a postgraduate student and recently recalled these books being quite simple, accessible, detailed and readable. This one is too. It was written shortly after the unification of Germany, so the emphasis of the writers concerns the challenges facing the labour market and identity.

However, there are some very insightful chapters about the fear of migration, and the desire for a European security and defence force. Both those issues have become even more important today. Therefore, it is very interesting to read parallels in political challenges and reflect on what has changed and what has not.

It is also a good book to clarify the positions of previous leaders such as Willy Brandt, Schmitt and Kohl. There are minor references to upcoming new politicians such as Angela Merkel which are fascinating. On the whole, this book tackles a lot of policies and the party politics therein. The detail and explanation of the role of FDP and the now defunct Republican party is valuable.

A good book.
