Anna James never planned on dying at age nineteen or ending up somewhere other than heaven. Five years later, her heart is still on Earth with her soulmate Grey, while the rest of her struggles to survive in Beyond. Not quite heaven and a lot like hell, Beyond is a proving ground where only the strongest souls are allowed to move on. With no way out, Anna keeps her head down and plays by the rules... Until she learns Grey is about to die.
Grey Wilson would give anything to go back and stop the accident that ripped Anna from his arms. But when Anna appears on Earth again, he quickly realizes things can never be as they were. Death and Beyond have changed her; brought out the dark side and dimmed her inner light. Before they can even revel in this semblance of a miracle, Grey and Anna find themselves in the middle of an angelic civil war where sabotage and danger lurk around every corner.
Anna's dark side is exactly what Azrael - the leader of the Angels of Punishment - craves. When Azrael lays out his demands, Anna will have to make the biggest decision of her life.
Elle J Rossi is a writer of Dark Fiction. Elle lets her characters take control as they lead her down dark and twisted paths on their haunting journey toward love.
When not writing, you'll more than likely catch her hanging with her husband, two kids and a cat who truly does rule the roost, or stealing the mic from her friends as the duel over country karaoke.
The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.
Anna is an angel who lives in Beyond which is not exactly Heaven. There are different levels in Heaven and Beyond is like a layover. Each level has its own leader. There are others who want to lead at the highest level and will challenge the leaders. These are angels but it is just like people who want to be in charge you know the top dog. It's like saying I am the best. Or you do want I say.
The angel Azrael is the leader of Beyond but wants to be the top dog at the highest level. He is also the top Angel Of Punishment or AOP. He will do whatever it takes and use whoever to get there. Azrael likes to play mind game with his angels. His AOP's or dominions as Anna likes to call them are afraid of him and jumps to do his bidding. They also walk around on eggshells around him. They do not want him to punish them. He has crimson wings and stands about or over two stories tall and wingspan around 20 feet.
Then there is Sarafina or Sara. She reads minds but only at a certain distance. Sara loves punishing others and seeing their fear.
And then there is Michale who misses a girl Lyssa or maybe she is his wife who is still on earth. Michale loved/loves this girl a lot and only wants to be with her. He thinks about her a lot. Michale is not quiet like Azrael's other AOP's he is not as mean as they are but he will still jump when Azrael speaks.
Another one of Azrael's angels Zeke rides a horse his horse has tiny wings and can fly. Everyone wondered why Zeke rode a horse instead of flying? Zeke and his horse fought in battles together. When Zeke and his horse died they were fighting in the middle of a battle and enjoying it. Zeke and his horse both went down at the same time and never got up again. No one knows for sure what happened. Neither one had an injury. Why did they both die at the same time? Why did they not have any injuries? What caused them to die?
Last but not least we have the angel Raham who is a brown-noser. He sucks up to Azrael always trying to please him. I think Raham may just be like Azrael someone who likes to be in control and thinking that jumping to do what he is told and enjoying it will get him more brownie points than the others. He will be Azrael's favorite angel.
Azrale sent Anna and Grey who is still alive to find the sword of Peleus. The sword has magic and Azrael believes it will get him what he wants, to lead at the top level. Another angel Chrison a friend of Anna's tells Anna and Grey why he wants this sword. Grey is/was Anna's boyfriend her soulmate. When Anna and went to Beyond she was always breaking the rules and going back to earth to save Grey's life. After Anna's death Grey started doing all kinds of crazy stunts. He would do anything that put his life in danger he loved the adrenaline rush he got from all the crazy stunts. To him Anna's death was his fault and he was the one who ended her life to soon.
Anna and Grey's search for the sword of Peleus sent them to Oregon. They had to fly to get there because they were given a certain amount of time to find the sword and driving would take up too much valuable time. Anna is afraid to fly on a plane and Grey thinks this is funny because Anna is an angel. Grey ask her why she is afraid when she can fly or could before Azrael had Sara, Zeke and Michale rip her wings off her punishment for breaking the rules. Her answer it is a control thing. When she had wings it was up to her how far or how fast she went. If a plane crashed she would be stuck in a metal box and she couldn't bail out. She would just have to go with the flow.
I really liked all the characters in Broken Flight but I especially liked Anna. Anna didn't think about herself she wasn't selfish at all. Anna loved Grey more than anything more than her own life as they say. She would do anything to save Grey to keep him alive knowing that she was breaking the rules and would be punished. And no matter what the punishment was she go through it all over again and again to keep him alive. She would save him and be punished over and over as many times as it took.
It took me awhile to get into Broken Flight but it finally picked up and took off like a bat out of hades. I have not read many books about angels or fallen angels but Broken Flight is very different than all the other books about fallen angels in the way that they fall. It never said in the book that Anna was a fallen angel but she did have her wings ripped from her body. I know that in other books about fallen angels they still or most still have their wings but some do not.
If you like reading books about angels with a new twist on fallen angels then Broken Flight is the book for you. Maybe you just want a little romance of two people who are soulmates then Anna and Grey's story would be right up your alley.
This was a book that I have mixed feelings for. On the one paw I liked the plot and the secondary characters a lot, but on the other I couldn’t get past my dislike of the main characters. As a result of this, I found myself struggling to read it. With that in mind, allow me to say that I believe that this is a story where your mileage is going to vary on whether you like it or not.
Let’s just get the main problem I had with the story over and done with so that I can then focus on the good stuff. I really didn’t like the main characters and I tried too, believe me I tried too, but I couldn’t do it. Grey in particular rubbed my fur the wrong way. While I could overlook his tendency to purposely put himself in harm’s way in order to feel closer to Anna (something I don’t approve of, but can understand), I couldn’t stand how he judged her for the clothing and make-up she chose to wear when they got back together. And if she didn’t act the way that she once used to around him, he judged her for that as well. It seriously bugged me to the point where I wanted to slap him with my claws fully extended. Toss in the fighting with her one moment and then trying to make-up with her afterwards, and yeah, I didn’t have a great deal of respect for Grey. He strikes me as being the type of guy with a lot of issues that he needs to come to terms with before he could ever have a healthy relationship with someone.
As for Anna, the only times I liked her were when she was actually standing up and fighting for herself and what she believed in. When she wasn’t doing this, she was questioning where her new-found anger had come from (personally I think a little bit of ruthlessness is a good thing every now and then), upset over fighting with Grey, or couldn’t keep her hands off of him (I get that they are “soul mates” but come on, every other chapter it seemed like they were getting it on). One minute she’s a kick-ass character who I could get behind and cheer on and the next she’s completely helpless and pathetic. Mind you, this is my interpretation of the characters and as I said above, your views might be completely different from mine should you choose to read this book.
That being said, let’s talk about the things that I enjoyed, one of which were the secondary characters. Mickale, Sarafina, and the rest of the AOP, including Azrael, were fascinating characters. They had a lot of depth, great personalities (I love that most of the angels I got to meet in this book were dark in nature), and were much more engaging than Grey and Anna. I wanted to learn more about them and I really wish that there had been more of a focus on them in this book. I loved Mickale’s story arc, found Sarafina’s and Zeke’s relationship to be rather comical, and just greatly enjoyed the scenes where they showed up. I don’t often find myself loving the antagonists much, but this book was an exception.
Another part of the book that I enjoyed was the underlying plot. This idea that there is a darker side to heaven, a Beyond, where you have to prove yourself in order to eventually advance towards something better, was interesting to me to say the least. Rossi puts a spin on the preconceived notion that Heaven is all love and light and does a magnificent job of making it more seedier and dark in nature. It creates so many possibilities and directions for future books to go in, I just loved it. This and the main plot, the search for the Sword of Peleus (I do so love mythology, even lose-based mythology), was what made me want to keep reading the book and seeing where things would end up. I guess I should also mention that the mystery surrounding Anna’s death also kept me reading though I will admit that it took way to long to find out what had happened.
Honestly, if it hadn’t been for the secondary characters and the plot, I probably would have put the book down by the fifth chapter and called it done because I really wasn’t connecting with the Anna and Grey story arc at all. So when all is said and done, this turned out to be a “meh” story for me. I didn’t love it but I didn’t completely dislike it either. It was just “meh”, and as a result all I can say is, you are going to have to just try this book for yourself and see where your feelings stand at the end.
Broken Flight is the story of Anna and Grey. Anna died five years ago and she's been in Beyond ever since, which is sort of like a level of Heaven. But it's more like Hell for Anna. She wasn't reunited with any friends or family when she died; but rather, she gets to be a courier for Azrael. Azrael happens to be this angel with blood red wings, and he is pretty badass. She also gets to spend time watching over Grey, back on Earth. At least until the day that he nearly kills himself.
Grey is an adrenalin junkie, putting himself in constant danger, because when he does, he sees Anna. But on this day, he's actually going to die. So Anna steps in and saves him. Now she's got to be punished. This is where you get to meet the AOP - Angels Of Punishment.
See, Anna and Grey were pretty good characters. They rode in the middle of the road for me. I didn't like them nor hate them. When they are reunited, I felt it was a little too quick of an acceptance on Grey's part. I mean, Anna's been dead for five years - and now she's in your arms. I expect a crazy reaction to that. I also just don't really feel the soul-mate type of love between them. They just didn't strike me as one of those couples who I just was going to love because they were so helplessly in love. My heart didn't really bleed for them.
But the Angels of Punishment, ohhhh, there was a group. Lead by Azrael, then you have Zeke, Sarafina, Mickale, and a couple others. They were exciting and dark. They captivated me. They weren't your typical angels where you could just picture them getting good Samaritan awards or saving kittens from trees. Nope, they were a bit different. Thigh high boots, clanging armor, flying steeds, naked rippling muscles... these angels commanded attention - and that's before you get to their egos and mysteriousness. They were large and full of personality. Yep, I definitely liked the angels.
As for the rest of the story, it was pretty good overall. I'm not usually a big fan of angels / fallen angel stories, so admittedly they are often a very hard sell for me. This story wasn't a bad story, it just didn't grab me as much as I had hoped. Elle Rossi is a terrific writer though, and that is clearly evident in this story. I like the concept, because who doesn't love soul mates and true love? I love that Anna was punished oh-so-badly for breaking the rules. And I really adored the AOP, because everything wasn't about being good, rainbows, and roses. That part I really liked. I think if you enjoy angel novels, you will really dig this one. It's different enough to catch your attention, and filled with enough action and mystery to keep you reading.
I haven't had a great time with books about angels. I'm guessing it's the fact that I love paranormal but most books about angels are about the religion behind angels, and for me that takes away from a plot. This book however was dark and seedy. Where in most books I've read angels are light and airy, these angels are dark and will stop at nothing to torture others. Especially the AoP (Angels of Punishment). And I absolutely loved the grittiness of this! The darkness that was brought to the angels and to their way of living. And it was nice to see a concept so different from the heaven/hell aspect!
The characters were really interesting. Anna being my favorite of them. But Azrael was definitely one of my favs as well. He's intense and demands attention in everything he says or does. His power just emanates from the book. It was so tangible that every time he was in the picture I was quite literally worried for Anna, but at the same time curious of his intentions. Elle J Rossi keeps him amazingly powerful but very secretive so I was guessing at what he wanted from Anna from the beginning!
And back to Anna. She is a fabulously strong character but still has her own weaknesses as well. The only thing that seemed a little weird was the relationship between Anna and Grey. There is so much push and pull between the two of them. And the sex in this had me shaking my head with curiosity. I get that they've been apart but there are things at stake here people!! But even as I say that, I do understand, it was just another aspect of their relationship that seemed strange but was still fun to read!
All in all I really enjoyed reading this. I think it's the first book about Angels that I did enjoy! The grittiness of Elle's writing is amazing and had me at the first sentence! Definitely a book that I didn't want to put down, although it took me a few days to read due to life getting in the way! I'm sure it would have been a one nighter otherwise! Can't wait to read more from her!
I will be the first to tell you I’m not really an “angel” fan. I usually steer clear, BUT, I read something a while back that took the creature of “angel” and totally changed the game. So, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked this one up… BUT, I’m pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I happen to love the darker side, and this one is perfect. Heh, torture and death, and I jump right on that train I know, what does this say about me hahahaha. Anywho, back to the story. I also really enjoyed the “new” concept of heaven and hell.
There are some extremely interesting characters put into play here. Most of the names will be familiar if you’ve ever read anything with angels. There are some scary ones. I think I am going to not tease you so much here. I know I’ve read angels before, and I usually hear the same old thing, and expect certain things from them, except you can throw that out the window here. Each character has their own personality here, and you can’t expect past readings about them to be so close. I loved that part Except Anna, I will say that I happen to really like her. She’s not the most stable character, which is probably what makes her so interesting… That or the fact that maybe she isn’t so alive… It’s complicated LOL
I also am thrilled to say I really enjoyed the style of this author’s writing. I am now a fan! It’s dark, it’s somewhat seedy, not to mention there’s loads of twisted drama! Who isn’t wanting to read that! I am now going to say, that maybe, just maybe, I am becoming a fan of angel books ooooo, always a cool thing when a book turns a hater into a lover Well done, Ms Rossi! 5 GRITTINGLY CREEPTASTIC PAWS!
Elle J Rossi's latest novel Broken Flight is dark, dramatic, and compelling and is the first novel in a new series called Angels of Punishment. Anna is a very relatable character despite the fact that she's dead - or perhaps because of it. She has a great deal of mental and emotional issues but the one thing - the only thing - that matters is that the love of her existence, Grey, is alive.
But Anna is being watched, maybe even groomed, by Azrael who is one of the oldest and most powerful angels. He's also sadistic and enjoys torturing and punishing people. So when Anna breaks the rules, Azrael is there, ready and willing to use it to his advantage. Only he doesn't count on Grey or the depth of connection between our two protagonists.
Anna and Grey are reunited but it's hardly the easy and joyful homecoming they could have wanted. Their reunion is just the beginning of a chain of dangerous and deadly events leading to a culmination that only leaves the reader wanting more.
I couldn't put Broken Flight down and I can't wait for the second book in this striking and seductive new series.
Elle J Rossi's Broken Flight is a dark and seductive thriller with plenty of twists and turns that will keep the pages turning until the end. I have definitely read my share of fallen angel novels, but the angels in Rossi's first novel in the Angels of Punishment series has a new view on angels and their afterlife.
Anna and Grey are fantastic for the leading characters of this novel, both are relatable and will do anything to protect the other. Anna is a character who has a lot of emotional conflicts. She knows she's not allowed to be with Grey, but she can't help but want him and that is what keeps getting her into trouble and she won't let a little bit of torture or torment get in her way from being with the one she loves, even though some of the decisions Anna made had me shaking my head and wondering why she made that choice.
Rossi has created her own gritty version of heaven and hell and this made the story come alive. Throw in the twists and the turns with the dark angels, a steamy romance and a quest that could possibly start a war, it makes for a thrilling read. I look forward to seeing where the next book in the Angels of Punishment series leads.
I've been dangerously close to putting angels on the no-fly list. I have myself to blame. I know this. I find something I like, a food, a wine, a TV show, a book, and I have it/watch it/read it until I can't stand it anymore. I understand there's something wrong with me. LOL!!
This book was *eyes wide, fingers clawed* AMAZING! It was so dark and gritty and I loved it! This book felt refreshing and new. It wasn't the fact that it's hugely unique. What is these days? But Ms. Rossi did a fantastic job of making this plot, this world, these characters her own!
There were a few parts I was wincing over before I read the book. The whole Azreael thing. I've seen this one played before and I've seen it go bad. I was pleasantly surprised! Not only was Ms. Rossi able to pull it off, she did it with a delicious amount of mystery and darkness.
I have to say, this is a definite must read! If you're in the mood for something you can sink your teeth into, this is the book for you!
Broken Flight by Elle J Rossi was a book that I had heard whispers about and made me interested in finding out what it is about. I was pleasantly surprised and found the book to a great read that I am surprised more isn’t spoken of it. The concept and plot was something new that I haven’t really seen done before quite like this, which always makes me a happy reader. I realize that this concept of the book may turn some people off immediately as it deals with death and the afterlife and many peoples concept of that after. However, I really liked how it was handled and found myself engrossed in the characters and plots. I loved the gritty and passionate world created and prose within the pages. Not wanting to give anything away lets just say that I highly recommend people to give this book a try and I am very interested in seeing what else this author will do in the future.
Oooh yeah, this is a great story. You'll find angels, but they aren't the warm fuzzy kind. These are the kind that will kick you in the ass and laugh at you when you fall. The premise is awesome, and the love between the hero and heroine is believable. I really, really want to see more of the Angels of Punishment... I love me some bad angels!
I've been on an angel kick (the badass kind, not the fluffy cherub kind), and this book didn't disappoint. The angels in this book are the kind that will kick you in the butt and laugh at you when you fall. The premise is awesome, and the love between the hero and heroine is believable. I'd love to see more of the Angels of Punishment.
Anna James became an angel after her death, she broke one rule and was tormented for it.Anna is dropped back to earth and is reunited with the love of her life,Grey.Caught between supernatural forces Anna and Grey wonder what their future holds.I loved this story.Very strong characters.
