Susan Lillian "Sue" Townsend was a British novelist, best known as the author of the Adrian Mole series of books. Her writing tended to combine comedy with social commentary, though she has written purely dramatic works as well. She suffered from diabetes for many years, as a result of which she was registered blind in 2001, and had woven this theme into her work.

I had to read this text for some GCSE coursework. I had not heard of the play or the author beforehand, and was not overly excited when I found out it was one of those dystopian Hunger Games style plays, as this genre is one of my least favourites. I found the characters a little bland and difficult to connect to or sympathise with. Even when acting the play I think I would find it difficult. I definatley wouldn't read this play out of choice, and don't think I'll be reading it again.
