Flora Jane Thompson (5 December 1876 – 21 May 1947) was an English novelist and poet famous for her semi-autobiographical trilogy about the English countryside, Lark Rise to Candleford.

Flora benefited from good access to books when the public library opened in Winton, in 1907. Not long after, in 1911, she won an essay competition in The Ladies Companion for a 300-word essay about Jane Austen.[6] She later wrote extensively, publishing short stories and magazine and newspaper articles. She was a keen self-taught naturalist and many of her nature articles were anthologised in 1986.

Her most famous works are the Lark Rise to Candleford trilogy, which she sent as essays to Oxford University Press in 1938 and which were published soon after. She wrote a sequel Heatherley which was published posthumously. The books are a fictionalised, if autobiographical, social history of rural English life in the late 19th and early 20th century and are now considered minor classics.

I love the way Flora Thompson wrote about nature: lyrical description with enough honesty to keep it from being saccharine. This book also has a fascinating autobiographical piece about her life working at a village post office in 1891.

A pleasing insight into country days of yesteryear, particularly interesting because of the references to the wildlife of the times, how much more diversity and how greater numbers of birds etc. than we see nowadays.

This book was good in light of it being by the sane author as Over to Candleford, which I just finished. She does a montlhy seasonal stories which I just glossed over, I wanted to see if I could find out more about the characters from which Larkrise to Candleford BBC Series is based. Got some clues, but it was an enjoyable book. Maybe will have to find Larkrise to Candleford book to get further knowledge of this Flora Thonpson.

Delightfully detailed, but a little disjointed. I had some trouble following some stories therefore had to read back over some paragraphs here and there. Since I learned of this book from "Lark Rise to Candleford" TV series, I inserted some images from the show. Hopefully, my viewpoint isn't completely off because of that.
