I picked up this book at my local used book store in the UFOs section because I have a fascination with everything to do with the unknown, and also because I saw that it was signed by the author and I thought that was pretty cool. I didn't know a whole lot about Sedona going into reading this book, but I was certainly enlightened and this book gave me quite a bit to think about.

Sedona, Arizona is full of strange, eccentric, and credulous new-age people. Nothing wrong with being weird, but the sheer number of people who congregate in this beautiful desert town to share inane ideas warrants at least a cursory investigation.

I recently moved much closer to Sedona, and being a pretty staunch skeptic, I thought it would be well worth me researching what it was about, particularly the "vortexes" that supposedly exist in the area.

My girlfriend got me this book for Christmas (she wanted to read it after I was done), and she is moderately spiritual, but I highly doubt even she will be able to take this book the least bit seriously. In case you were wondering, yes, those are UFOs on the cover.

Where to begin? First off, it took me about an hour to read, from cover to cover the book is only about 80 pages. Even though my version is the 18th edition, I noticed several grammatical and spelling errors, as well as just bad sentence structure that you would think would have made it through the editorial meat grinder by now.

The book talks about "Wapeka", mysterious Rock Men from space who inhabit the area of Sedona. I'm not joking. The book literally says they're from deep space, and the author talks about meeting/seeing them on hikes.

It also gives testimony, from both the author as well as "well grounded, intelligent people" on their experiences with UFO's in Sedona. It talks about the "vortexes" ("energy springs") which are apparently very strong points of energy that have (supposedly) been validated by "geological energy studies". Apparently these areas are excellent for meditation and spiritual experiences. The book also makes claims about an ancient advanced civilization in the city of "Lemuria" that used to exist as a spiritual hub in the area Sedona now occupies. Seriously...I'm not making this up.

It talks about a few other minor things, such as a house built under the architectural guidance from extra-terrestrials from other dimensions (there are 12 of them, apparently, in case you were wondering), mysterious encounters with the rock people and other entities, so on and so forth.

Bottom line, the only context under which this book makes sense is if it was written by somebody constantly under the influence of psychedelic drugs (I'm betting on peyote) -- or it was written by a person who I'm fairly sure qualifies as being clinically insane. Content aside, it is written poorly, and has random interjections that don't go with the "flow" of the book at all.

I try my best to stay away from people like the author, Tom Dongo, at all costs. That being said, the book was interesting, cheap (second hand), good for a laugh, and easy to review.

I give it two stars instead of one for two reasons; The first being that the book is mildly entertaining (until you realize that many people actually do believe this stuff), the second being a form of literary pity. This short book really is full of anecdotal, irrational, new-age conspiracy theory tripe. You can try to read it with an open mind, but good luck keeping that state of mind past the first 5 pages.

A METAPHYSICAL/EXTRATERRESTRIAL INTERPRETATION OF SEDONA

Author Tom Dongo wrote in the first chapter of this 1988 book, “Sedona, Arizona… is one of the planet’s most sacred sites. Here in Sedona is a rapidly growing metaphysical community which has roots stretching to the new age, new thought, communities of the world. Sedona and neighboring Oak Creek Canyon have long been holy ground for Indian tribes … It is a crossroads for the evolving New Age Family of Man---as seekers from all points of the U.S. and the world travel to Sedona’s beautiful and mysterious red rock mountains, pinnacles and canyons to find their own particular and individual enlightenment. Sedona has become the recent home to many new, adventurous residents who were irresistibly ‘drawn’ here. Drawn by a magnetic force few understood, but a force few could resist… Ask a hundred new age immigrants to Sedona and you will hear the same story.” (Pg. 1-2)

He continues, “one could say that [Sedona] is a town situated in a vast zone of powerful, shifting, mysterious and sometimes volatile energies. To label these energies in only magnetic or electromagnetic terms is to restrict their greater meaning. These energies are truly cosmic and of many variations and applications. Energy emits from the earth in the deserts, mesas and canyons in and around Sedona. Certain energies (vortexes) are at the moments in specific locations but can appear occasionally, or intensify, anywhere in the Sedona area. It is said that somehow Sedona’s iron rich red rocks draw or generate these powers. It is said that these energies will soon expand and become one---and then join with other energies and then expand across the face of the earth.” (Pg. 4)

He recounts, “As a partial explanation of the more unusual episodes, I have located… what I will call and interdimensional portal. This is an area 200 yards in length that beings physical and non-physical ‘phase’ through from time to time. I think this is a crossing point where travelers from countless dimensions intersect and sometimes they pause on their journeys to have a look around on this planet. It is then that these cosmic travellers come into direct contact with hikers, and the chance meeting---for the humans---has predictable results… Ships as well as individuals travel these interdimensional ‘highways’… There is also at times in the canyons a mysterious cosmic entity which vaguely resembles an upside-down cyclone. It is a gentle being of enormous power…” (Pg. 16-18)

He continues, “In the strongest of terms, I assure you these beings exist---they are as alive and real as we are! And in the very near future mankind, one way or another, will suddenly find itself in a face to face interaction and communication with these superbeings from space… Sedona is a hotbed of extra-terrestrial activity in all forms.” (Pg. 20)

He goes on, “I have been told that there is a race of dwarflike beings from deep space called Zeta-Reticuli who are approximately three million years ahead of us… These space beings, and there are hundreds of races of them, have been on this planet as long as we have. It is not an invasion by aliens from outer space as some would like to believe. If they were here to take over they could have done it eons ago. We have a momentous opportunity .. finally, the Family of Man has the OPTION to join the Cosmic Family of the Universe. And these great beings… would welcome us as sisters and brothers.” (Pg. 20-21)

He explains, “Vortexes, or energy springs, are very magical places. If you are fortunate to be able to spend time in a vortex, spend at least an hour… There are no good or bad vortexes, they just ARE.. Everyone is affected differently by a particular vortex. Vortexes ABUNDANTLY intensify spiritual/psychic abilities and desires. The immediate effect of the more powerful vortexes can often be felt as a sudden change in air pressure---an electric density… Never try to intellectualize the vortex… Instead, join your energies with the vortex and experience the ‘feeling’ of vortex energy.” (Pg. 29-30)

Later, he adds, ‘Conventional scientific definitions usually categorize vortexes as electro-magnetic, magnetic, psychic, natural, electrical, kinetic, thermal, atomic, gravitational, astronomical, cosmic, potential, positive, negative, inductive and extrusive.” (Pg. 34)

He observes, “Amongst the new age community here in Sedona … channeling is as common an occurrence as watching football is in Cincinnati… I am a semi-professional channel and I teach channeling… in California and in Sedona.” (Pg. 39)

He asserts, “Sedona is presently situated near the area of what was once a great Lemurian city and temple complex.” (Pg. 45) Later, he adds, “Space ship sighting in Sedona are sporadic, usually occurring in a one or two month period during any season of the year. But they can be spectacular.” (Pg. 49)

He concludes, “Sedona is, metaphysically, a compendium. It is a condensed summary of what is going on in the rest of the world…The future is actualizing now in Sedona in part by a gathering of some of the most serious, most dedicated, most conscious (awake) individuals on the planet. They are being called here from everywhere. Perhaps soon we will know the exact reason why… Mankind is on the threshold of a change which may only occur once in the evolution of a race such as ours… The time has come to allow unconditional love, to allow our hearts and intuition to chart the course. It has never failed.” (Pg. 62)

This book may appeal to those with either/both New Age/Extraterrestrial interests.

I didn't buy one concept put forth in this book. Sedona is a beautiful place, but that doesn't mean any of this is true.
