The Chosen Body: The Politics of the Body in Israeli Society

Rate this book
This book examines how the social and cultural paradigms of contemporary Israel are articulated through the body. To construct a panoramic view of how the Israeli body is chosen, regulated, cared for, and ultimately made perfect, the author draws upon some twenty years of ethnographic research in Israel in a range of subjects. These include premarital and prenatal screening, the regulation of the body and its imagery among appearance-impaired children and their families, the screening and sanctifying of the body as part of the bereavement and commemoration of fallen soldiers, and the discourse of the chosen body as it surfaces during terrorist attacks, military socialization, war, and the peace process.

Liked most: her analysis of the idealized Israeli body, and the adandonment of disabled soldiers, the invisiblity of disability in a society that doesn't make much effort to accommodate them after their service.

An exploration into how Israeli society conceptualizes the outside world, specifically its neighbors, as well as colonial expansion of the territory would have added to the argument.

informative about the intricacies and evils of zionism and how it infiltrates every nook and cranny of Israeli (and US) society. 3 stars only because i found the writing to not be very smooth and i would have to re-read paragraphs in order to understand - but that could just be because i don’t have a full grasp on sociology and have a harder time understanding it.
