Likely to be an autobiographical sketch of Glazebrook's alter egos, part travel memoir, part social commentary on coming of age but all a wonderful romp through the emotional trials of not belonging in the Victorian years. For Tresham Pitcher, caught between the judgement of aristocracy and his brunt economic realities, adventure beckons. Through the fabrication of Captain Vinegar he finds a new self, one capable and not possessing the sensitivities and self awareness that brought on such pain in this unforgiving age. This is an adventure novel in spirit and body.
