The best books are often the obscure ones we stumble upon while looking for something else. I found this book in the bargain bin section of the Better World Books website while searching for affordable resources for my master’s thesis. It is a goldmine of basic info for linking Carl Jung with (Christian) spirituality. It is also quite good for spiritual growth. The first half of the book addresses humanity’s search for meaning. The author links the inner life with the anima of Freud and Jung in the second chapter and in another chapter, she reviews the spiritual approaches of Merton, Underhill, Ignatius, and Teresa of Avila. This book has a very contemplative outlook. Highly recommended both for research and for exploring the inner life.
A good read for anyone wanting to dig deeper into their Christian spirituality. While reading the earlier chapters on the Jungian topics (etc.), although fascinating, I kept wondering when the "journal" part was, which of course was towards the end. For it, Santa-Maria encourages you to do the journaling part in one sitting... which I quickly found out I did not have the mental stamina to do. The journaling section is 7 chapters (!), split into parts where it asks of you incredibly big personal questions of your life and Christian spirituality. I did not do this book with a group (also recommended) and treated it more like a devotional but the author primes you and leads you well with each journal topic, providing accompanying scripture and meditative / mood preparation. All in all, glad to have read and participated with this book. Also, appears to be a great reference to read other books, of which she suggests many!
