Same Difference is a charming book for young readers (4-8 year olds) that addresses the sensitive and sometime divisive issues of beauty and identity. It has a lyrical, upbeat air that begs to be read aloud and offers an engaging rhyme pattern for young children. Vivid illustrations capture the spirit and innocence of Lida and Lisa, two first cousins who find themselves at odds with each other over their physical differences. With the help of their wise grandmother, the girls soon realize that their bond is deeper than what they see and our differences are what make us beautiful.
The book, Same Difference, by Calida Garcia Rawles is based on diversity and acceptance. The storyline is focused on two young girls named Lisa and Lita. Both Lisa and Lita are cousins who share all their activities together. The girls are so attached that they forget they have differences until they play princesses at their grandmother’s house. Lisa and Lita have a discussion on how different they can appear to be. They ask their grandmother why are they distinct? And who appears correct? The grandmother explains to the girls that they come from the similar family member, with distinct background, but with different physical features. These differences do not make a difference because what matters is what they share. Their differences did not matter after their talk with their grandmother and they learn to embrace their distinction and continue to create new memories. This book is a great example of illustrations, the images allow the readers to connect the ideas to the real world. One area of improvement though would be to show more discussion among the girls about how they feel about their differences. Readers will make connections to their discussion and will learn to accept others despite their distinctions. This book is recommended for four to seven-year-olds and for educators to talk about in their classrooms. Same Difference is a highly recommended book for school and home settings.
