Dez is on the run from the covens. Nearly six months have passed since her father, the demon Asmodeus, opened a gateway allowing countless of his kind to spill onto our plane of existence. Using her newfound abilities to hunt down the strays, Dez’s life has become a never-ending cycle of violence and bloodshed, punctuated by the paranoia of constantly looking over her shoulder for the Council’s vampire assassin.
When she receives an unexpected phone call from an old friend, Dez makes her way to the northern Arizona desert. There she finds a message waiting for her from beyond the grave, a message forcing her to confront the one thing she’s been dreading for months.
Now Dez is haunted by a ghost from her past and faced with the secret truth of her origins. With her life and the lives of countless humans hanging in the balance, she’s forced to face off with an enemy she doesn’t even know exists. It’s time to choose her destiny and the clock is running out.
SPEAK OF THE DEVIL, the second novel in the Hellfire series by urban fantasy romance author Jena Gregoire.
Bestselling author JENA GREGOIRE was born and raised in New Hampshire, USA, and despite her abhorrence for any season which dares to drop to a temperature below seventy degrees, she still currently resides there with her two children and several furbabies. Always a passionate reader, her love of urban fantasy books inevitably morphed into a love of writing them. She is currently working on two series - the Hellfire series and the Executioner series.
Hellfire #2, Six months after the events of the last book, Dez is still missing and Vegas hasn't stopped worrying. They both have been killing as many demons as possible just not in the same place. When an old friend calls Dez out of the blue with new information Dez realizes she needs Vegas's help. After an awkward couple if hours they get things sorted out and are even stronger than ever. A startling realization that the person behind the events in the last book wasn't working alone and that even more demons escaped before they closed the gate. Dez if faced with a choice of two paths she could take one that could possible end it all quick and easy or the hard way.
There's a little bit more personal history revealed in this one for Dez but still so much about this world is left unknown. I do like the two new characters, Charlie and Harley. I like the whole ether thing too, that was pretty cool. Overall, very intense ending and I can't wait to find out what happens next. I hope the shifter do come more into play in the future, I'm a sucker for shifters.
We catch up with Dez a few months after she left Venice in a puff of smoke. Since then she has been trying to stay away from the covens and ahead of her boyfriend / Council's assassin who are now surely hunting her for killing Cassandra. When an old friend calls saying someone is looking for her, she finds out being dead isn't always the end.
What follows is a rollercoaster of emotions, prophetic revelations and a race against time. Who will be left standing at the end? Dez and Vegas or their new unknown enemy?
My take on the book:
While I did miss the emotional link that I had with the first book, meeting up with Dez and Vegas again was great :D Oh oh oh... and what a surprise at the end!!!!! :D
World-building was good. Descriptions of all locations and scenes were detailed enough for easy and immersive reading.
Character building was equally good. We got a lot more insight into Dez's mind and reasoning but the rest of the cast was a bit left out. I would have loved to know, for example, how Harley and Charlie met :)
Pacing and flow were decent. Most chapters flowed really well, other chapters started off with a narrative that felt like someone was stating facts only, which confused the hell out of me. Had to go back a bit and start reading again for it to mesh together. Other than that, the book is well written and I have found no (noticeable) errors. And yes, this book contains sex (if that is important to you).
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and while I enjoyed it, it didn't reach the same level as the first part. However, looking forward to seeing this unfold further!
Where to even begin...we pick up 6 months after the events from The Devil You Know and things aren't looking to good for Dez. She's lonely and her days and nights consist of dealing with the escaped demons from the gateway. She's missing Vegas and wondering why he hasn't called. Through all that Dez gets a call from an old friend requesting her presence straight away...A few new characters are introduced, some I loved while others I wanted to punch in the face.
We see some other old faces and when things seem to be falling into a semblance of routine Dez and Vegas are blindsided by a face all thought was dead...I don't want to give away too many details but it was a rollercoaster ride of touch and go emotions for a bit. I will say some great developments were had and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment in this unique series...we hear some hard truths from some of the lies that were being told.
There is an array of new information and I'm curious of what will become of it. But through it all Vegas and Dez are strong as ever together and I look forward to what their new abilities will bring to the table. Make sure you check out Burning, The Devil You Know, and Suffering before Speak of the Devil hits retailers later this month :)
I was lucky enough to be able to beta read this title, though when it first hit my inbox I didn’t see it that way. It was in that tricky time during the holiday season when everything seemed rushed so I let Ms. Gregoire know that I was happy to read it, but I wasn’t sure if I could fit it in before her dead…
And I’m not really sure what happened for a few hours, because I’d cracked open the file and devoured it whole. Just unhinged my jaw and bam, gone. It was that good.
Speak of the Devil is the second book in the Demon Legacy series, Gregoire’s second full length novel, and you’d think that meant the title would suffer from the sophomore slump or middle child syndrome. Rest assured, it does not. Instead, it’s a fast paced book that keeps you flipping pages until you wake up in a fugue wondering where you are and when you can get more Dez in your life.
And then that wears off and you’re all “but seriously, what is the deal with Charlie?”
A highly enjoyable read that brings to mind Jim Butcher and Kim Harrison. If you enjoy Urban Fantasy, I encourage you to give Gregoire a chance.
WOW, ok so this book was a huge improvement from The Devil You Know. At least in my opinion. Now the first wasnt horrible, but I felt it could be improved on. And boy the author didnt disappoint. Now there is more to come. I know that without a doubt, so I will also assume this author will continue to grow. 6 months have passed since the end of the last book, ad Dez is in a bit of a tight spot. Shes growing restless with her life, With Vegas' disappearance, and more. Then out of nowhere she gets a message to go see an old friend. Maybe this is just what she needs. But then when someone from the past (and presumably dead) makes an appearance she and Vegas have to make s
