Walking the Disciple's Path: Eight Steps That Will Change Your Life and the World

Rate this book
Linda Perrone Rooney, experienced spiritual director and author of the popular Habits of the Soul , brings over forty years of experience in pastoral leadership to bear as she offers readers an eight-step plan to living as disciples, translating head-knowledge of Christ into everyday action. Walking the Disciple's Path challenges readers to live as disciples--actively putting into practice the values, behaviors, and teachings of Jesus. With exceptionally graceful prose, Rooney walks readers through the gospel, moving from understanding to transformation--from head to heart to action--combining the intellectual and spiritual "aha moments" that impel us to follow Christ more intentionally. Rooney eloquently describes eight scripturally based steps that lead readers to a change of surrender yourself daily, live as a blessing, overcome violence, give for the right reasons, pray like Jesus, see the good in others, offer compassion and healing, and live without fear.

What an amazing book that will definitely inspire me to become a more positive-faith-filled Catholic Christian.

The Eight Steps include:

1) Surrendering your Nets (surrendering what does not belong to God or help to contribute to His will in your life).

2) Live as a Blessing (Be a blessing to others out of love; not for show or admiration or temporal glory, but for the glory of God and eternity)

3) Love your Enemies (Forgive them, pray for them, and walk away taking with you any lessons you may have learned)

4) Cultivate a generous spirit (God blesses a cheerful giver, if you have a particular craft, create to give away. God blesses us with gifts and talent to help do his will here on Earth-not to keep them to ourselves but to be generous with others as God has been generous to us)

5) Pray like Jesus (Jesus would go along to pray so that he could get restored for the rest of his journey. He also surrendered everything to his Father - Not my will, but yours be done.)

6) See the Good (Always have eyes to see the blessings, see the good in others, and be the good toward those that are just beginning their journey.)

7) Heal all you Meet (We cannot heal like Jesus healed, but we can be with those that are hurting-giving them hope; we can be with those that are lonely-giving them love; we can be with those that are frightened and anxious-giving them peace.)

8) Be Not Afraid (Do not be afraid of this journey, but always remember that God is with you, TRUST in Jesus and keep your eyes on Him - it is when we look away when we falter and stumble in spiritual darkness. With Jesus, there is always light and peace. Trust Him in this earthly journey so that we can take what we learn-HEAD and move all into our HEART for love conquers evil.)

I could write more of the messages that jumped out at me but things will jump out at you because you may be on a different place in your journey and you will hear what you need to hear to help you grow in your Faith, Hope, and Trust.

Each chapter examines a different aspect of Christian discipleship: responding to Christ’s call, generosity, prayer, trust, etc. The content would be accessible to someone new to the Christian life. For anyone who has read extensively on the topic, this book would not contain anything new. 2.5 stars
