Shakespeare's classic story of magic, monsters, love and mayhem! This is the 9th book in the Shakespeare's for Kids series.
This mini melodramatic masterpiece is designed with 3 plays for 3 group sizes. Each play is only 10-15 minutes in length. 90% very funny and easy to understand kid language, 10% Shakespeare lines mixed in.
Brendan P. Kelso, known to the kids as Professor Peculiar because of his unique and humorous personality, came to writing modified Shakespeare scripts when he was taking time off from work to be at home with his son. "It just grew from there" Within months, he was being asked to offer classes in various locations and acting organizations along the coast of California. Employed as an engineer, Brendan never thought about writing. But he has always stated, "There is no better way to learn than to have fun!" Brendan makes his home on the central coast of California and loves to spend time with his wife and son.
I entered the Good Reads giveaway for this book thinking it would be a nice play unit for my future classroom. Before reading this child friendly edition, I would have said I had an okay understanding for The Tempest. Upon diving into these child friendly plays, I was skeptical about how appropriate the play could be.
That being said the Authors do a wonderful job making it appropriate and fun for children! The play will have children laughing the whole time. I especially enjoyed how not only did they use actual Tempest quotes, but after the use of some that could be difficult to understand, the character would explain what it means. This gives the students the language without a teacher or adult having to stop to explain it.
I also believe these plays could work well in a higher grade special education setting as it gets the point across using actual language without being frustratingly difficult to understand.
This will be a great unit in the classroom. I really feel this will be loved by many children. Look forward to reading more of these adapted Shakespearian plays.
