Diary Of An Arts Farmer: Exploring the Intersection of Life, Faith, Art and Community

Rate this book
Diary Of An Arts Farmer explores the intersection of life, faith, art and community through the sacred poetry of Mac MacKenzie and the stunning photography of Stephanie Loewen. Authentically sensitive and insightful, yet at times scathingly and unabashedly intense, Diary Of An Arts Farmer uses image and word to deftly weave the light with the dark, taking us on a journey through the brutally raw undulations of passionate spiritual climax to the bleak, solitary shadowlands of the dark night of the soul — from the peaks of divine intimacy to the valleys of the shadow of death – a life lived in the balance between the intense joys of communion with God and the stark realities of simply being human.

Before writing Anna Smudge: Professional Shrink, MAC wrote for Popular Science Magazine, interviewing NASA scientists and covering some pretty cool topics such as asteroids, space junk, and the development of Mars space suits. But MAC is probably most famous for her article regarding catching diseases from public toilets. How is that for a claim to fame?!

I have been a fan of Mac MacKenzie's work for a couple years now. I have followed his blogs and this is where I first encountered his work. Needless to say I was thrilled to learn he was compiling a few of his works into a print edition. It is a very attractive book and has found a place on our coffee table and I pick it up regularly.

Mac's poetry is real and very honest. Some may find this unsettling. Those who think they have life all figured out and pull all the strings may have little interest in Mac's book. But, life has a funny way of reminding us that we are not the all-mighty, that indeed struggle is as much a part of an authentic rich life as anything else. Those who have lived a little, will be able to relate to the highes and lows, the joyful shouts and the mournful laments of this rich poetry.

The photography is wonderful too and it is quite obvious of a legitimate synergy between Loewen's photographic eye and the way written word and image are arranged in such a way to take a collection of individual photo's and poems and hold them together to form a cohesive whole.
