Gibsonburg

Gibsonburg is based on the true story of a high school baseball team that had a regular season record of 6 wins and 17 losses in 2005. During the regular season they lost 13 games in a row, were mercy ruled 7 times, and lost the last game of the season by a score of 17 to 0. In a magical way, their first year coach got this same team to win 8 post season games in a row which took them to the State Championship. No team, in any state, has ever won a State Championship with a losing record. Although baseball is the backbone of the story, Gibsonburg is actually more of a coming of age story that deals with the many trials and tribulations facing high school students today. Along the way to the State Championship game a romantic love story unfolds and a mystery that rivals any discovery that has ever taken place in the Midwest.

This book is titled Gibsonburg and it is written by my neighbor Bob Mahaffey

This book is about a terrible baseball team that goes 6-17 in the regular season (6 wins 17 losses). But they some how sneak into the playoffs in division 4. The author also throws in a little romance in the story to the main character Andy with a girl named Cathy.

I think that this book was very good. I love the story of a true underdog team. Also I like how the author doesn't just write about baseball he also throws in romance and the feeling about the players.

I recommend this book for kids my age 12-up. The book doesn't always have baseball so I also recommend this book to kids with long attention spans. So kids that don't have attention spans probably shouldn't read this story.

Greg recently read this book and enjoyed it. While many of the details about the Gibsonburg baseball team and NWOH were wrong, he gifted it to my classroom library and recommended I read it.

I love baseball and NWOH. In fact they're two of my favorite things in life. This book should've been a no brained, easy 5-star read for me. Instead its the total opposite! The plot was too contrived, the teenage characters painfully cliche, and worst of all the writing was AWFUL! It's like this book had no editor whatsoever!

I give it 1 star because I have to. On a bright note, I have at least two students in mind who I think will like this book, so all might not be lost.
