Sarah Orne Jewett was an American novelist and short story writer, best known for her local color works set in or near South Berwick, Maine, on the border of New Hampshire, which in her day was a declining New England seaport.
I stumbled upon this little book and having grown up in New England, I thought it would be fun to read. The stories are quaint little glimpses into New England townspeople in the late 1800's--full of gossipy old ladies and rambunctious children. The author's love for nature really comes through.
My library has the version printed in 1888. Consequently, it's on my kitchen counter now. Her old home is a few miles away from where I live. Weird. Books this old evoke reverence in me. ahem. yeah.
