I have given this book several chances to “capture me” and it hasn’t. It is a thin volume with very nice graphics and photos that covers everything from grape varieties to growing regions with stops at drinking songs and drunkenness. It has “Buyer’s Guide” (never to be exclusively relied upon or quickly outdated) and a history of wine making and blending.
In essence, this is a “coffee-table” book reduced to 5”x 9” format. Too large to be a “pocket book” and too broadly conceived to be definitive, it sits waiting for an occasional glance. I find my time better spent with Hugh Johnson’s Pocket Wine Book that lacks the lovely photos but does a better job in almost everything that matters to me:
Pairing wine with food Evaluating so many wines and wineries (and updated annually) Discussing what to drink now and which vintages to hold Details on almost every growing area on this planet
