Summary: Let's Meet a Police Officer is a book that helps teach students about one of our community helpers, a police officer. It's broken up into short chapters to explain what a police officer is and what they do. It's a picture book, but every few pages is broken up into a chapter to divide information. This book explains who a police officer is and what they do by telling the story of Officer Gaby. It discusses er transportation, k-9s, and team safety.
Critique: This is a book for introducing community helpers in kindergarten and first grade. The character are not real, so it's fictional, but it keeps the reader informed as well as interested as it explains the need for community helpers like police officers in life. The illustrations in this story are bright and colorful and do a great job at telling the story without the text being needed.
Prompts/Questions: What does a police officer do? Why do we have them? Have you ever seen one in your neighborhood? Why would police officers use different types of transportations? Why do you think a police dog would be needed?
Craft Elements: Have students make a thank you card for an officer near their school. Explain that we need our police officers and that we are so thankful for all they do. You could also have students draw a picture of what a police officer does.
