I love this book I have read it twice something I normally don't do . I ran out of books one week this summer this one was on my "yes it's a 2x shelf " haha !
Connections draws together the very different worlds of the underworld, the academic, the investigative with the day to day lives of the characters that bridge these worlds. Steven Marini draws us in with his characters who we get to know, to understand and to see the personal side to their lives. For example we come to know and to care for a young woman who lost her mother and then her father in tragic circumstances, who is abused by older boys in her school/neighborhood then is "protected" by a neighbor whose mother takes her in and takes care of her. One would need to be a cold hearted person not to want her to succeed in college and to be able to leave her underground life that she has depended on to stay alive, to make a living and to keep a her dream alive. This is of course a "murder mystery" and the suspense, the intrigue, the Hercule Perrot like detectives, the card playing, smoking and drinking underworld characters of course they have exciting and dangerous lives ... with exciting and dangerous and sensuous sexual and personal encounters. WOW. The time flies and we arrive at the end to be surprised by how it is all resolved and who lives and how all of these conflicts and relationships are resolved. Jack Contino is real. I identify with his enjoying his bourbon after a normally intense day ... out in the streets and protecting us all here on Cape Cod. Steve Marini captured my interest by casting Jack Contino as a Detective who is trying to be "semi-retired" by taking a job in the quiet Dennis Cape Cod Community. Though his best laid plans are interrupted by unexpected crimes and people spilling over into his life. The descriptions of the Cape Cod Towns and places brings the whole story alive and adds to the personal connection with the many people who vacation or live on the Cape. The characters are amazing and the story keeps you enjoying the page you are on yet looking forward to turning the page or the next corner to discover what is ahead.
