For Great-Great Grandma, sewing clothing for the family was a necessity. In today’s ready-to-wear society, it’s a creative and rewarding personal choice. Wendy Gardiner, the editor of Sewing World magazine, combines traditional skills with today’s fashions in a book that offers both a complete sewing education and an irresistible collection of stylish projects. Along with instruction on everything from making seams, hems, sleeves, and collars to attaching linings and zippers, she provides instructions and patterns for a strapless bustier, trousers, a robe, a camisole, various items for children, and more. Her clear directions ensure that even beginners will get great results.
Good introduction for beginners — informative, and with lots of clear photos. Goes through different types of sewing machines, tools, threads, fabrics, interfacings, explains how to make simple pattern alternations, covers seams, hemming, darts, zippers... you name it. The 15 projects are alright, maybe not everyone's style, but explained well with diagrams.
This book is very informative. It explains fabric types, thread types, machines, needles, techniques. It would be a handy reference guide for the beginner or intermediate. I haven't tried any of the projects. They require pattern transfer or enlargement.
