Helping Hyperactive Kids ? A Sensory Integration Approach: Techniques and Tips for Parents and Professionals

Rate this book
Sensory integration has provided help to children with behavior, learning, and motor skills problems for over 40 years. A treatment based on play, it helps children absorb, process, and respond to information in an appropriate manner. This book provides a complete overview and explanation of the therapy, as well as practical sensory integration–based techniques that can be used by teachers and parents to help the hyperactive child. This non-medical approach can be used in conjunction with, or as a substitute for, traditional drug treatments.

Too much theory, not enough actionable steps. It's got a title that overpromises. Skip this.

This was a very good book as far as providing information regarding sensory integration and the therapies used to improve SI issues. There was very little in the way of practical tips for parents (one short chapter). The entire book kept recommending therapy intervention (which I completely agree with) but was not all that helpful in providing additional information to help parents out. The background of SI and SI deficits was quite thorough and would be beneficial for those without that background but don't expect to gain a vast arsenal of techniques to try with your child.

I loathed this book. It's presented as telling you HOW to help hyperactive kids using sensory integration, but it's just a lot of theoretical-overview type of stuff with no instructions. It tells the parents basically to let the occupational therapist handle it. The meat of this book could have fitted easily into a tri-fold pamphlet. NOT recommended.

The activities and information in this book are excellent. Very user friendly in both application and language. The activities would need to be adapted for older children with sensory/hyperactivity issues and I didn't see too many suggestions for doing that.

Some new strategies presented, but a bit repetitive.
