*SPOILER ALERT* I enjoyed this book a lot! For the most part I enjoyed reading about most of the characters. My favorite is Jeffery the hero. Helen/heroine is great too, although her hyper-sexual, attention seeking behavior got old half way thru the book, but at least she did finally get over herself. I can't believe I didn't realize Jeffery was a sub! Looking back, I totally see it now and can remember being confused by his supposed Dom behavior. If you're into the sub/Domm or bdsm genre then you WILL more than likely enjoy this book too. I totally dig it!
Although this book is filled with explicit sex, the writing craft of this author was so delightful, that I ignored much of the "hot" content. It was not offensive, but somewhat shocking. The plot does need these experiences to make its story work. It is so refreshing to read an author with a sophisticated vocabulary, and the ability to write so well. The main characters are on a journey of self-discovery.
An excellent and very exciting book. Beautifully written and well researched by an author who is obviously sophisticated and worldly. Her understanding of both the physical and phycological importance in the play between the dominant and submissive makes this a first class book.
Fifty Shades of Grey deserves a Pulitzer prize compared to this... I did not have high expectations but couldn't even make it through the book. There are much better options to read than this, better plots, better writing, just don't waste your time.
The first half was wonderful. Once it got to the island, it was terrible - boring events and rife with Asian stereotypes. the O word used often (I guess that's par for the course for a 1994 novel).
If you thought the writing in Fifty Shades of Grey was bad, this is worse. I have never read anything less believable and less erotic in my life. It basically follows the exact same formula as 'Grey' but with an even more implausible plot... or no plot. An overbearing, mega rich Dom attempts a relationship with a idiotic, naive (in this case 30 year old) woman. The sex scenes are nauseating, beginning on the very first page. The main female character Helen can't decide if she loves or hates the male lead, Jeffery. In one scene they have sex, randomly asking to be punished. What follows in a sickening scene involving him chasing her around the room with a belt while she screams and cries. She hides in the bathroom for about two minutes, deciding she hates him and wants him to leave. Then she comes out of the bathroom and LEAVES WITH HIM for more sex. Honestly, I don't know who would like this book. I couldn't finish it.
