The essence of Islam is conveyed to spiritual students in this practical and heartwarming introduction to the religion and its practices. The ancient wisdom of the faith is lovingly passed down to readers from a distinguished lineage of teachers, including the author's own parents and grandparents. Each chapter features a series of thought-provoking questions and suggestions concerning Islamic spirituality along with a list of actions that will guide new believers in the simple spirituality of the faith while spreading compassion worldwide.
"One prostration of prayer to God frees you from a thousand prostrations to your ego".
"...it is in the trembling that the pain softens".
"When my slave remembers Me quietly in isolation, I, too, remember him quietly in My own Being, But when he remembers Me in a group, then I remember him better in a group" - Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H)
The story telling, anecdotes, and references to Islamic teachings are a gentle reminder to spread the fragrance of your faith where ever you go and in what ever you do.
I really enjoyed the little stories and anecdotes in this book. There were a few parts where I have to admit I couldn't really believe but then I am not a Sufi. It just got a little 60s 'flower powerish' for me (sorry). There were also suggested practises. I like the idea of this but ultimately I just don't have the memory for them. So unless i carry this book around with me they were rather redundant. There are many snippets of Rumi throughout the book. However I feel that much is lost in translation which is a great shame. For that reason I'm not the biggest Rumi fan (shock horror). Despite this the book is an enjoyable read and made me chuckle in places. Which is never a bad thing. I loved the beginning and I loved the end and am looking forward to reading his 'Spiritual gems of Islam'.
Each of the chapters of this book are little spiritual gems, with verses from the Qur'an, Hadith and wisdom tales, and verses from Rumi interwoven with meditations, stories from life, and spiritual questions. A fine text for individual study, it would serve small spiritual groups exceedingly well. If, like me, you're not Muslim, learn more about a neighbor's faith and more about your own as you do so.
Jamal Rahman has written a beautiful explanation of Islam and its many practices. It is an inspirational work of art, and includes teaching stories and exercises. I thoroughly enjoyed it and gained great insight and respect for Islam. I would recommend it to any spiritual seeker.
Saya rasa semua muslim setidaknya perlu membaca buku ini, setidaknya satu kali. Buku ini membantu saya mengenal Allah dengan lebih baik lagi. Meskipun ini terjemahan, tapi bahasanya tetap apik. One of my life-changing book.
