Make Mine to Go

Rate this book
Genre: A mix of gay erotica and contemporary erotic romance.

One key to the success of Justin and Toby's marriage is plenty of sexual variety, sometimes with other men they meet at the local BDSM club. While Toby assumes the submissive role in their power exchanges, it's more often Justin who generously caters to Toby's erotic appetites. Toby's interest in flirting with a salesman should be trivial in comparison to his other desires. Instead, it sends both men down uncomfortable paths.

Toby manages to assure Justin that it was harmless fun, or so it seems at first. More troubling than Justin being unconvinced is that Toby doesn't entirely believe his own story. When Toby finally figures out he wants something only another man can give him, he knows it won't be easy to tell Justin. More importantly, is realizing a fantasy-- even an exceptionally compelling one -- worth the risk?

I'm relatively new to writing fiction, but an old-timer in BDSM. I've published a few short stories and a novelette. Everything is best classified as erotica, but "Make Mine to Go" is closer to erotic romance. I’ve been doing BDSM education off and on since 1987 and my stories reflect my experiences with the D/s lifestyle.

Variety of all kinds can be good, if it is what both partners need. Variety of the sexual kind can be risky, because both partners' needs may not be the same. Misunderstandings and jealousy are huge watchouts. Especially when that play involves bringing in other men.

Toby and Justin thrive on challenges and on trying different things. While they are married, and love each other a lot, they also have an open relationship when sexual play is involved. Personally, I will never understand this, but reading stories like these help me see what it might look like. The author does not gloss over any of the issues (emerging jealousy, the fear of losing their partner), and this made the story more realistic for me. Toby and Justin talk everything through, and that is the only thing that will keep a relationship like this stable. Well, that and a very high level of trust.

As for the BDSM play: while not the focus of the story, I thought the scenes we get to witness were hot. A major factor for me was that their activities are clearly consensual, and there is very little D/s. Toby almost demands the things Justin does to him. Talk about topping from the bottom! It's all about having fun and experiencing different types of sensation, not really about the submission –other than in the moment of the scene.

If you don’t like stories with multiple partners and lovers having sexual encounters with other men, this story is not for you. If you are curious about the dynamics in an open, yet committed relationship, this story can give you a glimpse into the lives of two such men, and if you like your stories on the spicy side of kinky, you will probably enjoy this short book.

Oh my, the games some people play….

With everything I’d read, I thought it had put me in good stead to recognize the steps to most plot twists, but I have to admit that Make Mine To Go snuck up on me. And it left me chuckling at my self for not seeing it.

It opens with Toby, a twenty-two-year-old part-time sub, enjoying a touch of ménage with his dominant husband of four years, Justin, and their mutual friend (also a Dom). Toby is seen to feel comfortable with the complexity of dipping his toes into the beginnings of an open relationship, and he revels in his role, eager to investigate the stinging sensations being played upon on his body and mind. Justin is a little more standoffish, and like any good Dom, he sees Toby’s lingering thoughts over a scene and wandering gaze over other men is leading to something missing in the relationship for Toby. Toby is left thrown when Justin eases the conversation into the possibility that something is wrong, mortified that Justin possibly feels neglected in their relationship. But after Justin’s persistence to face the discussion, Toby comes to realize that maybe Justin is right, he needs something more, although admitting it is harder as they both know voicing it will lead them down a dangerous path.

The complications that arise are typical of any long-lasting relationship, that, even in D/s word, sometimes feel as though they need something new in order to survive. The question is always there as to whether we should take that choice, and thus bring in the threat of longer-lasting damage if we do.

I wasn’t taken by the idea of upset, initially. We’d opened with a D/s ménage scene where both Justin and Toby seemed happy enough to play out, so to suddenly have Justin say he was questioning just how willing and distracted Toby seemed to be with other men was a touch disorientating. And in that respect, I would have liked more of an in-depth look and build-up to their relationship to help draw that conclusion.

But then you pick up how in tune Justin is to Toby, recognizing Toby’s unease before Toby can figure out for himself, and I love the care and dynamics of the D/s relationship being played there. Which then made my heart tear a little when the twist started to play out, and that “Hell, he’s actually going to go through with it” came into play. I really felt the full impact of the implications it would have for both of them. There was a natural progression that makes you miss the signs, so that when the twist is revealed, you have that ”Should have seen that coming” moment, but you’re eased back down to normal pulse levels with how Keith allows the novelette to end.

Not a bad realistic portrayal of a D/s relationship at all. And even though I would have loved it to have been a longer work, I enjoyed the ride Make Mine To Go took me on.

I was very impressed by MAKE MINE TO GO, an M/M novelette by NTM author, Dilo Keith. Very well- and tightly-written with great dialogue, it packed a lot into its short length and as with any good story, left me wanting just a little… OK, a lot more. Highly recommend this erotic and thought-provoking short for those comfortable with reading about M/M, BDSM, and/or a committed yet open relationship.

I consider MAKE MINE TO GO to be an erotic romance (vs. straight erotica) because the story is a vignette of the MC’s relationship. Toby and Justin are a legally-married homosexual couple whose sexual play places them somewhere between monogamy and open. This practice (and thus, their seemingly perfect relationship) is tested when Justin senses, and Toby finally acknowledges, a certain… ennui? restlessness?... with their sex life. Specifically, Toby wants to make their semi-open relationship a little more open.
I finally figured out Justin couldn’t provide the missing piece, not directly. I missed the thrill of a new encounter and seduction, the excitement of the chase and being caught, or perhaps doing the catching.

And this is when the story becomes thought-provoking. While not everyone can relate to (or perhaps even understand) open relationships, I think that readers can relate to the more basic concept of changes to, and within, a relationship over time. Whether it’s “getting too comfortable”, “slump”, “rough patch”, or “seven year itch”, it happens.

The entire story is told from Toby’s POV so there were moments when I felt a bit frustrated. So accustomed to dual POVs, I couldn’t help but wonder what change(s) in Toby’s behaviour alerted Justin and what he really thought about further opening their relationship. Perhaps it was deliberate but the single POV left me to guess along with Toby as he tries to balance his love for his husband with his “new” desires while not hurting him or undermining their marriage in the process. Per Toby: I hated the idea of him thinking I valued him less by wanting something extra. I’d give it all up if it was going to hurt him.

So what to do when one partner suddenly needs something “more”? I loved how MAKE MINE TO GO handled it, as well as its surprising twist. Definitely hope to read more from this author.

Note: FWIW, the BDSM scenes were very well done but I didn’t find the BDSM aspect to be critical to the story. It’s not as if Justin wasn’t meeting Toby’s submissive needs or the Lifestyle itself gave rise to Toby’s desire for “the thrill of the chase”. But it was a huge relief to read BDSM scenes written in such an authentic manner. Oh and did I mention that it was hot? ^ᴗ^

Awesome book cover. In fact yummy!

Toby and Justin seem happy and content. There is love and satisfaction with their life style and friends but something seems off and the search for answers is interesting. Questions abound and answers seem to be just out of reach.

Fantastic sex and games are abundant as well hopes and dreams.

It's difficult for me to rate, as in the first half of the story I couldn't relate to the MCs, that got better in the second half. Additionally the whole story centered around the BDSM stuff - who did what to whom and with what, all the mechanics. I missed learning more of Justin and Tobias - was it mentioned what profession they have? Don't remember. And why the constant need of other people in their relationship? No clue. For me even the end wasn't surprising.
So overall it's 2 stars for me.

First I should apologize because it took me forever to published this review. Actually, my previous computer died suddenly and I lost hundreds of documents.
But enough with me...
I had mixed feelings about this book. Let's begin with the positive points:
-the settings and characters are realistic; no billionaire or GQ cover boys
-the situation is plausible; no incredible coincidence or office where 60% of the staff happens to be gay
-the feelings were subdued; no outrageous expressions of love forever repeated ad nauseam
Unfortunately, these positive points were offset by a certain coldness of the tone and characterization. In a nutshell, I never really went into it. This could also be explained by the modest length of the story.
Thanks again to the author for sending me his book and sorry for not posting my review earlier which, it goes without saying, only reflects my personal taste.

I would like to thank the author for allowing me to read this story. It is out my comfort zone but sometimes it's nice change. A challenge.

My emotions for this was all over the place while I was reading this story. Honestly their were a few times I felt Justin was just being walked over by Toby. With that said, I feel that the communication overall was pretty good.

Justin and Toby like to add some spice to their marriage when it comes to the bedroom. Toby enjoys sex... sex with men. Though he loves his husband the most and wouldn't give him up for anything, he loves changing it up. Justin is (usually) okay with having another(or more) join them. Justin loves Toby and watching him with others, but he has his own insecurities.

Toby has to figure out how to communicate that despite his wanting to expand his sexual adventures, Justin shouldn't feel insecure, because Justin his is love.

Towards the end I honestly wasn't sure if I was liking where it was going. and I was relieved. I'm still on the fence with having others in the room with them. But at least they were both consenting, so that is much better in my books.

Let's talk sex. Safe Sex.

This is a huge deal to me. Especially in these types of situations. Multiple partners (especially)with a married/established couple. It needs to happen even with blowjobs(even if they don't come). There was one particular scene that wasn't for me. Nope. I'm sure that's hot for some people but not me.

Overall, it was a decent read. While there was some 'yellows' there was nothing that I couldn't handle and I liked Justin and Toby. I especially enjoyed the communication between them. Well it was hard to talk about it they still did.

I really wanted to like this more than I did, however, the writing for most of the story was disjointed and more like a research paper on BDSM relationships rather than a story about two men who enjoyed spicing up their marriage.

That being said the last bit, from where Aaron came in, read beautifully. You were pulled in to enjoy the author's skill without the distractions present in the first part.

My Rating System:

I think there wasn't much of a plot to keep me entertain. I didn't like much the characters and I felt it concentrates only on the sex. The part that I did like was how the story shows the characters in their normal life, how the marriage struggles are shown. The ending was unexpected and it make me smile, it was one of the things I liked the most of it.
