Gertie The Witch is written by Valerie Thomas and part of the Little Rocket editions. It is aimed at children over 7 years old. It is a longer chapter book for this age range so it is encouraging those confident readers to go to the next level of reading. This book has some lovely illustrations that are colourful and vibrant.

Gertie The Witch is a humoured story that show us how children can use their imaginations and strong wills to outsmart a witch who is up to no good. Gertie plays horrible tricks on the neighbourhood, she turns Sam the postman into a pig and his poor wife Doris into one too. Annie and Will their children decide this is the last straw and this witch Gertie needs to be taught a lesson. So in the evening when everyone goes to bed, Annie and Will sneak out of the house armed with only torches and go to Gertie's house they can hear themselves breathing and hear their hearts pounding, they only hope Gertie does not hear them. the children peer into the window to get a good look at what in the house and in the far corner they spot a book of spells, they know they must retrieve this book, it would be the only way to teach Gertie a lesson they thought. So Annie slips into the house and quietly creeps around to get the book, they take it back home and place it under Will's bed. They go off to sleep because tomorrow will be another day.

Of course the next day Gertie wakes up and begins to look for her book because she needs to rescue her sister Susie who has been mischievous and got herself in a lot of trouble, but the book is nowhere to be found, there is some blaming that goes back and forth between these too until they realise someone must have been in the house.....

In the meantime Annie and Will are up, reading the spell book, trying to figure out what spell to use to teach Gertie a lesson. they are devising a plan to solve the fact that their parents are still pigs and how not to get turned into pig themselves. So the book continues, a delight at every turn of the page. these children are problem solving and soon the will outsmart the witch.

Gertie the Witch is a fun story, showing that what you think is a joke, not everyone will find very funny. I really enjoyed this story.
