This is an anthology of 20 essays written between the 18th century and the 20th century, that illustrate the history of social and clinical thinking about sexuality.
The main thing I like about this book is that it is a historical document of attitudes of sexuality over nearly 100 years. After reading this work, it is easy to see some of the historical contexts of concepts of sexuality, particularly as they pertain to conservative attitudes regarding the masturbation of youth, abstinence and homosexuality. It's easy to see the similarities in attitudes today held by more conservative circles. The talking points are rhetorically the same and the subject barely altered.
The articles are presented in chronological order and it is interesting to see the positive shift that occurred from the 1830s through the 1920s.
