It is rather a shame that Martof himself never got to see this work in print, because it is a beautiful thing. Well written and illustrated this book brings to life the region's hidden diversity, Reptiles and Amphibians. Densely packaged but perfectly readable are accounts of each species native to the region, along with commentary and descriptions of the region's habitats. This book works both as a great portable field guide but also as a reference tool at home.

I coveted this first edition, published in 1980, when I was a child. I remember checking his out of my local library frequently and strolling the pages looking for both creatures I could only hope to see one day and ones familiar and part of my near-daily adventures exploring the nearby wood lots.

I left a more thorough review on the newer second edition's page (click this link) and a urge you to consider purchasing the newer edition (2nd edition) due to the updated information.
