With a good friend of mine, who is of Turkish descent, in 2017 I have made a city trip to Istanbul. That included a boat trip over the Bosporus, sailing in between the European and the Asian parts of Istanbul/ Turkey. Immediately after this holiday I went to the largest second hand book market in Europe, in the Dutch city of Deventer and there was this book: Het veer van Istanbul (The ferry of Istanbul, meeting people alongside the Bosporus). Ha!, so that volume ought to be mine and so it did.
The book contains very many interviews with many Istanbul people living and/ or working at one side or on both sides. It reflects all kinds of knowledge, all kinds of feelings of people through all social classes, interests in politics, religion, education, economy and so on. I got a good and varied insight in those matters of this versatile country, by its location on the edge between east and west with such a rich history and with such an uncertain future. Very good portrait with a far wider perspective than ‘just’ this important city, as well as the text as the many atmospheric illustrations. This publication from 2010 doesn’t seem outdated yet. Een perfecte vier. Je kan ook de brug nemen van Geert Mak. Maar dan ben je nog niet in Azië. Dat huppeltje op het eind is dan ook nergens voor nodig, bij de brug. Mag wel bij het veer. Volgt u nog?
