The reference provides guidelines on the numerous aspects of performance practice for choral music based on the Renaissance Period, the Baroque Period, the Classical period, the Romantic period, and the Modern Period, with special emphasis on meter and stress, tempo, dynamics, tone quality, pitch, texture, and expressive aspects of the music of each period. Appropriate for Junior/Graduate-level courses in Choral Conducting and Literature..
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While many choral literature texts can become somewhat anthology-ish, this book allows the reader to understand trends and overarching themes of each period. The format allows the reader to absorb information on the subject rather than list it, as a reference book. It includes performance practices of each period and includes various sources for the reader to continue their research. With the exception of the personal tangents in the final chapter, this book is focused, useful, and well-assembled.
