Nick of Time: The Nick Scandone Story

Rate this book
Nick of Time captures the astounding struggles and twists of fate that happened on the road to turn an Olympian's Gold Medal vision into a miraculous reality. Sucker-punched by the gut-wrenching diagnosis of incurable Lou Gehrig’s disease in the prime of this life, champion sailor Nick Scandone had a choice to “get busy living or get busy dying.”

Nick and Mary Kate Scandone took the death sentence as a wake-up call and learned some prolific life lessons to not only become a stronger couple - but in many ways transform a global community fighting to help them reach their goal together. This inspiring story will make you believe that dreams can come true even if they don’t come out exactly as you thought they would.

Nick of Time is the inspiring story of one man's Olympic dream and how he made it come true despite the bigger-than-life challenges presented by terminal illness. Told by Nick Scandone's widow, Mary Kate, this book reads quickly and easily. It will make you laugh, cry and shake your head in wonder. Throughout the book, readers who are unfamiliar with the world of sailing (I would probably get knocked out by a swinging sail within five minutes of setting foot on a boat) are treated to a simple explanation of how sailing works.

The book is well-paced, leading us to the inevitable ending with strength, clarity and tenderness. It never feels as though Mary Kate is trying to mask or hide her feelings. She offers her readers a glimpse into the reality of becoming a caretaker for someone with a debilitating illness, but she also offers the reader hope by highlighting the importance of precisely that: Hope.

The conclusion of the book is particularly well-written and will leave you with something to think about for a good many days to come. This is a great book to pick up on one of those days when you're feeling sorry for yourself. It will snap you out of it quickly through the sheer force of its author's grace and humility.
