Jessica is a single mother who has been telling stories since as far back as she can remember, even to the point of telling them to her family on long car rides. She dreams of having her books someday become Best Sellers. For now though she is just happy spreading what she loves to those around her. When she is not working or writing, she can be found playing with her daughter, listening/dancing to music, or just lounging around. She loves romance novels, especially if they are paranormal and she would love to hear from you! Tormented is her first novel.
200 years ago, an attempt to create a super-vaccine turned ordinary humans into a vampire race. A group of specially trained vampire-fighers, called the Ultorum, keep them in check. Over the decades, they have developed an uneasy truce. The Ultorum keep the vampires in check, and the vampires keep from killing humans.
Angelina Davis is a stand-out among the Ultorum. Her superior strength and speed are unmatched. Along with her friend Michael, also an exceptional Ultorum, she hopes to protect humanity from supernatural dangers. One day, her friend and fellow Ultorum is killed. The investigation into the death leads Angelina to discover that someone is killing vampires and Ultorum alike. In order to find out who or what is behind the bloodshed, Angelina agrees to go with a handsome vampire called Ethan into his world in an attempt to flush the killer out.
In Tormented, Ann gives the popular paranormal romance genre her own spin. She takes all the staples of the genre—a relatable female lead, attractive and charming romantic interests, temptation, looming danger, suspense—and throws in her own mythology. What starts out as a seemingly straightforward tale of vampires versus humans soon expands in an unexpected manner, raising questions about Angelina’s own true nature. Why is she different from the other Ultorum? What do her strange recurring dreams mean?
While Tormented is reminiscent of vampire series aimed at teenagers, such as Twilight, it is clearly intended for an older audience and takes a more mature tone. Some aspects of the atmosphere are more similar to Anne Rice’s vampire tales. The main players are in their twenties—young adults, but adults nonetheless. While a love triangle between Angelina, Michael, and Ethan does develop, the romantic tensions are woven into the fabric of the plot in a way that keeps them relevant to the primary story.
Ann’s vivid writing brings each scene to life. The scenes in which Angelina enters and experiences Ethan’s underground world of vampires are especially well crafted, shining from the page in a manner only the book medium can capture. Ann takes you into the characters’ heads, letting you see what they see, hear what they hear, feel what they feel. It’s easy to get lost in Angelina’s head as you experience the story through her perspective. Ethan, while less prominent, is similarly well written, a character who is simultaneously sympathetic and a touch frightening.
Tormented is one of those books that could easily be read in one sitting. The mysteries and thread of suspense running through each scene keep the story rolling forward at a relatively quick pace. Ann does a thorough job of developing her paranormal world, setting up systems and hierarchies for both sides with an impressive level of detail. The history between the vampires and the Ultorum feels familiar and original at the same time—familiar enough to draw in fans of the genre and original enough to keep them interested. Part romance and part heart-pounding suspense, Tormented will appeal to adult and teen readers alike.
Now, my confession - I am fan girling ALL OVER this book. Seriously, the last 30 or so pages all I could think was, I'm almost finished the book. I don't want this book to end.
When I got this review request I pondered whether or not this was a genre I could get into. That and to be honest Twilight made me hate vampires, and the word twilight so I was not sure how this book would sit with me.
This book is amazing. Nothing I can say could ever do this book enough justice. It's got such a unique spin on the world of humans, vampires and what not. You won't find yourself thinking "not another vampire book". Instead you will finish the book thinking "this is THE vampire book"
I'm an Anne Rice fan, and a Poppy Z Brite fan, but THIS, Tormented (Immortals Saga) is the vampire series I want (need)to be reading.
The author knows how to drop a bomb, that leaves you stunned and unable to stop reading. I found myself thinking about this book even when I wasn't reading. I was grabbing for this book when I had so much as 30 seconds to read.
The writing is smooth, the story flows, you easily get sucked in. You can't help but love the characters, even the ones you are not supposed to like. They are just so well written.
The ending was fitting, though it also completely surprised me. I am so used to books that always tie all loose ends in a pretty bow at the end. My first reaction at the end of this one was to email the author to be sure I had the entire book. :)
The ending is the perfect ending to the first book in a series, there is some closure but also leaves questions that will gnaw at you until your fingers are finally grabbing at the first chapters of a second book.
Buy this book, you will be glad you did. Trust me.
Now, I'm going to go sit on my hands and wait for another book. #teamEthan just sayin' ;)

This is such a fresh spin on the vampire genre! The actual world that Jessica Ann created is fabulous!!
The characters are absolutely fabulous!
The story has action, fighting, killing, romance, tension, suspense, compassion, mystery... It really has all the makings of a great series!
Okay - so the negatives about Tormented:
The editing with regards to punctuation. Incorrect punctuation really drives me bonkers when I'm reading.
The cover. I really wish there was more to the cover... a hot man with red eyes... an Ultorum... Angy. I'd love to see the characters all on the cover in some intense scene so it gives readers more of an idea of what type of book they're picking up. I'm sooooo glad that I was given this book to read because if I was to pass it in the bookstore or come across it on the B&N website, I would've kept scrolling = that would've been a travesty. >_<
I would definitely recommend this book to readers who enjoy a good paranormal read. For the first book that J. Ann has written, it's a great read!! There's a bit of romance but definitely not as much as I would like - the potential for quite a triangle. Hence the reason I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next book!
I thought this book was amazing! The story line kept me guessing and was never predictable. I liked the author's style and it kept my interest! I can't wait to find out what happens next!
As you can probably tell from the books I read, I am a paranormal and romance lover and when I got asked if I would read this book I was instantly intrigued by the description, even if I wasn't keen on the cover. I know the vampire/werewolf genre is getting slightly over used now and maybe becoming a little predictable so I was slightly worried about whether J.Ann could bring anything different to the genre. I must say this book was a pleasant surprise though and it hooked me more than I thought it would.
Even though vampires and werewolves are included in the novel, the story focuses more on the Ultorums (stronger humans) and I loved that fact. It meant that the book strayed from the stereotypical vampire novel and separated it slightly in the overwhelmed genre. It mostly follows the life of Angelina -but did switch between different people's lives at certain points - and how her life changes when a near death causes her to meet the Vampire Ethan. I loved Angelina, she was strong, determined and knew how to fight so in a way it made the book remind me of Rachel Vincent's Blood Bound, which is one of my all time favourites.
The story line was intriguing and gripping. The action moved at a faced pace and I had trouble putting it down, I probably would have been up all night finishing it if I hadn't had college the next day. I loved the romance triangle that started to develop and J.Ann did a brilliant job of making the reader connect with her characters. At first, before the (predictable) love triangle emerged I thought that I would stay on Micheal's side as he was strong, kind, supportive etc and when Ethan appeared I thought I would grow to hate him. However by the end of it I was torn as to which guy I preferred and would want Angelina to be with and if you think everything will be resolved you are wrong, Tormented leaves you on a terrible cliffhanger and will leave you wanting more.
There were a few downsides to this book though. At times, when the book switched perspective I found myself a little confused at first at what I was reading but this was sorted out as I began to learn the characters more. It also jumped a lot with J.Ann using "***" to move the story along. I'm not against this but maybe it needed to be less frequent so as not to disrupt the flow too much. There were also a few minor grammar and spelling issues that caused me to re-read a few sentences (breaking up the story) to make sure it wasn't me just reading something wrong and figure out what was meant to be there instead. These were however minor and infrequent so didn't detract too much.
Over all this book was a nice surprise. It brought a slightly different twist to the vampire genre and was easy to understand. This book is a quick read (maybe too short if you enjoy it as much as I did) but packed with action, romance and suspense. It was well written and the characters were developed brilliantly. I can't wait for the next installment to find out what happens and would highly recommend this book to paranormal/romance lovers!
When I read a book like 'Tormented' I realise that I may indeed be a little fickle with my affections - here I not blame myself but Jessica Ann for creating such a . . . . yummy (are reviewers allowed to use that word??!!!) male vampire!! Forget Edward, Damon and Eric . . .I want to be bitten by Ethan! 'Tormented' wasn't all swoon-worthiness though and I struggled with the female protagonist Angelina. The story begins with her using her Ultorum skills against Vampires but receiving a reprimand from her father, and Chief of Unit, for not receiving back-up. Although Angelina is excellent at her job she likes to break the rules and inadvertently this is how she ends up involved with Ethan. Angelina also has a friendship with the top male Ultorum Michael, however I found him untrustworthy and sneaky. This was part of the reason I didn't like Angelina - for a character who was supposed to be so strong, independent and feisty her indecision over her feelings for him were a complete contrast. 'Tormented' is a gripping read - it has elements of the paranormal, romance, along with mystery and tension. Jessica Ann writes with fluidity meaning the pages roll by, yet her characters have humour and emotion. Yes read this book but hands off Ethan!!!!!
An ecopy was provided by the author is exchange of an honest review.
Tormented is about Angelina, a vampire hunter, or an Ultorum as referred to in the book, who for the sake of her kind and to stop a war, has to trust the very thing she hunts, a vampire, one of the most powerful, and follow him on a hunt that will reveal secrets far more dangerous than what they were hunting and evoke emotions they both weren't ready for.
I liked Tormented. While it wasn't something totally new it was unique in its own way. The concept of how vampires and Ultorum were made was very interesting and new. Angelina was a strong girl, but she was viewed as the strongest and succeeded at everything she did. That annoyed me but it wasn't anything I couldn't get over while reading.
The pace of how everything was going was very good but I thought the book was short. I would have liked it a bit longer. The love triangle sure made things more interesting and I'm look forward to the next book to find out what happens next.
Tormented was an excellent story and very well written. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Angelina is quite a complex character. Not only do others not understand or truly know her – she is about to learn more about herself than she ever imagined. The romance piece (minimal) is initially similar to a good versus bad type of situation but that isn’t necessarily the case. Since I tend to like the underdogs I love Ethan’s character. There is a great deal left hanging at the end so I am sure J Ann plans to develop a sequel. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this story and each adventure was developed fully. It is easy to feel like you are part of this story and to develop feelings for each character and their roles in society.
