Why I chose to read this book:
1. I was intrigued by a Goodreads friend's review, so I immediately signed it out through my local library;
2. since I'm the one in my family with the responsibility of getting gifts, I looked forward to checking out this resource book; and,
3. May is "Nonfiction Month" for me!

Positives:
1. I did find some interesting gift ideas that I may use in the future;
2. most gift ideas came with a little relatable message that the gift giver could attach;
3. I liked the alphabetizing of gift giving, from "A is for Anniversary Gifts", "L is for Last-Minute Gifts" to "Z is for Zero-Cost Gifts";
4. includes end pages that one can record information titled "Special Dates I Wish to Remember" and "The Giftionary VIP Record" (this looks helpful for remembering specifics about gift recipients, but there might not be enough room to record everything.) A helpful "Index" is also included; and,
5. you can revise gift ideas from specific celebrations to suit your own needs.

Niggles:
1. be careful with the idea of hiding a gift within a gift unless you are positive the recipient will love and use it! If not, they might give away the gift (totally unaware of the hidden gift), or worse, throw it out;
2. many ideas were not new to me and/or I incorporate several of these ideas already;
3. some ideas are outdated;
4. some ideas are repeated in different sections throughout the book; and,
5. I felt many of the suggested messages sounded cheesy, eliciting a few eye-rolls from me!

Overall, I'm sure this book contains an inspirational idea (or two) for the reader. You may want your own personal copy as a reference. Myself, I'm okay with signing it out from the library.

Well, it’s that time of year again. So much to do, so little time! Almost all of us at one time or another have been, or will, become stumped at the prospect of giving a gift. There is a continual struggle to find the unique gift that screams, “You’ll really like this and you won’t forget it’s from me!”

The GIFTionary by Robyn Freedman Spizman is the perfect little book to solve your upcoming dilemma. Perhaps you’ve got a special person turning 50. See page 11. How about office gifts? See page 87. For unique gifts you’ll want to see page 131. To thank volunteers, see page 129. For zero or minimal cost gifts, see page 164.

My constant gift dilemmas are gifts for teachers and hostess gifts. All through the book are wonderful ideas on gifts for teachers or hostesses. See page 85 for specific ideas on hostess gifts, and page 20 suggests filling a teacher gift basket with unique apple surprises such as apple butter, apple cinnamon tea, apple stationary, etc.

There are gift ideas for pet lovers, gardeners, golfers, care takers, and your favorite librarian (ha). Pages 25-30 contain fun gift ideas just for men. Thumb to the index in the back of the book to find an amazing list of gift ideas. This is a must-have book, and of course you will find it at the Onalaska Library!

All of the staff at the La Crosse County Libraries hope you will find time during the busy holidays to treat yourself to the gift of relaxation and simple, free fun at one of the five county libraries. Warmest holiday wishes to all of our loyal patrons and to those new patrons we have not had the pleasure of meeting yet!
