Chicken Wars

Rate this book
"When God expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden, Dog was heartbroken. She whimpered and yelped until God agreed that any creatures who wished to join the humans could do so. Adam and Eve promised to protect and love any animal joining them. In return the animals agreed that humans could eat meat as long as they did it with thanksgiving. Thus chickens and all other domestic animals joined humans in the Great Agreement."

With the rise of industrial agriculture, the system is collapsing. God sends a recently deceased diplomat back to earth as a chicken to restore the proper relationship of humankind to domestic animals. Eight-year-old Jennifer Johnson finds the chick floating down the river, names him "Superchicken," and is delighted to learn that he can talk. Her father runs a broiler farm and it isn't long before this rooster discovers the fate of the overcrowded, industrial coop chickens. Suffering endless hardships, he leads a flock of chicken followers through the wilderness to the "Promised Land," a run down old-fashioned farm belonging to Hopi Trumbull. Superchicken organizes an army of fighting cocks, shuts down the chicken factory and holds a press conference. The publicity leads to a new and more harmonious relationship between Heaven and Earth and humans and animals. The Great Agreement is restored. In the tradition of Animal Farm, Chicken Wars is a fantasy adventure and a satirical, compassionate commentary on money, religion, and love.
