A decent primer for 2010; a bit of a relic for 2026. If you’re aiming for a career in traditional network TV, it’s a 4-star. If you’re trying to actually produce for the "New Media" promised in the title, it’s a 2-star. I'm splitting the difference at 3.
"A producer is an idealist, a realist, and a sophisticated gambler." — True, but this book doesn't quite teach you how to win the bet in the modern age.
I picked up the book hoping it would be my go-to manual for TV production and I was disappointed. Most of the touch points in the book are relevant....if you're producing something fairly big...for an American television. For someone making a smaller production in a totally different environment, country and culture it was too exhaustive on things that didn't matter that much and still lacked answers to relevant questions for my context. It's not useless, though and I'm sure I'll consult it every once in a while but it really is not the manual I was hoping for.
Good college textbook for those interested in broadcasting or film. But definitely for those just starting their careers. For those who've been in the business awhile, nothing new.
