In 1992, Greg Searle won gold in the coxed pair alongside his brother Jonny at the Barcelona Olympics. At the age of 20 he received an MBE, and by the time he had reached his mid-30s, his career as an international athlete was over. Or was it? This is a book about obsession - about the drive to be the best you can be, whatever your age.
A fantastic account of the topsy-turvey world of elite sport. You're winning one minute and then losing the next.
What makes this account by Greg Searle so remarkable is that the efforts and determination, the sacrifices and the glory were extended over 20 years. Whilst the theme is clearly the journey from his gold medal at Barcelona 1992 through to the bronze at London 2012 its path is not what you might expect. It might be fair to say that whilst the majority of people remember the exploits of Redgrave and Pinsent, their incredible Olympic careers and subsequent broadcasting roles, Searle's has been much lower-key with his focus on personal development and succeeding in whatever he turned his focus on. A young family, sailing with the GB's Americas Cup in New Zealand, working for a leadership and management company came all before the decision to come back to rowing competitively and working towards another Olympic gold medal at London.
It's a story definitely worth while reading even if you're not a rower, or even a sportsman as Searle's wise words and attitude to life is one that can only inspire and provoke positive thoughts..
