There were fourteen in the poetry class-drug addicts in a rehabilitation program ranging in age from fifteen to twenty-seven. At first some came out of curiosity, or because the class was a break in their normal routine. But after a few weeks, participation in the sessions had become a privilege. Out of these poetry meetings have come some remarkable expressions of self. From hundreds of poems teacher Sunna Rasch and poet Lee Bennett Hopkins have culled the collection presented here. All are written by former addicts, out of terror or despair or hope or their personal experiences.
Lee Bennett Hopkins was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2017. He holds a Guinness Book of Records citation for compiling the most anthologies for children. He has also received the Christopher Award, the Regina Medal, and the National Council of Teachers of English Excellence in Poetry for Children Award. He lives in Florida.
