i simply love Oskar !
i also love the story of his grandparents , i'm not sure if i understand his grandfather or hate his guts .
the Japanese woman in the recording made me cry :(
i hate jimmy snyde -i think that's his name- and how he and his friends bully Oskar and crack up the bad way.
i love how much Oskar's grandmother loves him ! it makes me wonder if i'll ever be loved that way.

I love Oskar and the way he is handling the death of his dad. The book is very well written and the way the story of Oskar and his family is told, is brilliant!

I have to admit I never would have read this book had it not been made into a movie. In fact, I had never even heard of it until I started seeing the advertisements. It appeared to have everything that a heart warming blockbuster should have in order to get an Oscar nomination: Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, 9/11, cute lil kid that reminds us of Haley Joel Osment... Why wouldn't I want to read this book first?!

The book evokes all the right emotions from a reader that I think a really good book should. It makes you teary eyed. It makes your heart skip a beat. It makes you go "Awwe!" It is a 9/11 story so it makes you remember. It makes you recall that day, maybe think back to where you were and how you were affected. It makes you sad. It also makes you angry. More than once, I wanted to throw this book across the room. But I didn't. I finished it. And I'm glad I did.

I immediately warmed up to the kid, Oskar Schell, as a character. He's a cute little kid with a sense of humor, big heart, big imagination, one who asks too many questions. But as the central character, telling his story in first person, you have to remember how any real kid affected from 9/11 might react to losing a family member that day, how would they process it years later?

Sure, Oskar's story is an adventure - both physical and emotional - as he finds a key that he believes is a clue left by his father and he goes in search of the lock it opens. But the real journey is Oskar seeking answers to questions, and in truth, trying to find out what those questions are.

Oskar's chapters are intertwined with those told from his grandparents' point of view and their own struggling relationship with each other and with losing their son. Toss in the author's use of various photographs throughout the story to give the book an artistic point of view. There's also lots of play on words and stream of consciousness storytelling that, at times can be very daunting, definitely set a certain mood when reading it.

Like I said, I probably never would have read this book had it not been for the movie, though I haven't seen the movie yet and probably won't until it comes out on DVD. But I'm glad I did read it. It was not time wasted, and for me, any book that both frustrates and enlightens is a book worth spending time with.

Brilliant book...great view of life from a child who lost his Father in 9/11, makes you realise how this event must have really touched those who lost nearest and dearest that terrible day. Clever and unique way of putting this across to the readers...an original book, and use of images to bring the story to life.

This remarkable book will have you laughing, surprised, and crying throughout the entire read. Each person is on their own journey through pain, hurt, then joy. They will learn more about each other through all of their lives and circumstances. This is definitely a book I will pick up again to read through and experience once more.

Complex, intriguing, fun and deeply poignant. Not an easy read because you must engage your brain to follow but a completely enjoyable read and one that takes you deep into the heart of a young boy and gives you so much insightful history into what molded him to be who he is at that moment in time.

Engaging, heartfelt, compelling...and unique. This novel sucked me in from the very first page. If you know someone with or work with children with Autism, this novel will resonate with you on some level.

An interesting very different book. It is very confusing though and the plot is kind of boring because not much is happening in the book. But I love the way the people think because it is so simple, so different. Confusing like thoughts are. And I like the stories of all the people he meets.

Loved this book and had been waiting to read it for a few years. I loved the main character and the fact that he took so many chances and was so daring. This book made it hard to put down whilst reading and my emotions matched those of the main character perfectly. I was so tuned into this book.

Had a really hard time reading this because of the dialogue between characters. I finally watched the movie which was much easier to follow the boy and his struggles.
