Sandra Bullock Smith is a retired human resources executive, world traveler, angler, adventure junkie and storyteller. She grew up in northwest Florida and spent 20+ years in the colorful gumbo of south Louisiana. Her current home base is Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she lives with her husband, Mike and their mongrel pups. Mike is an endurance runner so you can often find her supporting ultra runners at 100 mile trail runs. She loves experiencing new things, and has traveled to all seven continents.

One of her greatest challenges in life was the ten-year period during which she and her siblings cared for their aging mother. This experience led her to pen her first book, Trading Places: Becoming My Mother's Mother. She hopes it offers insight and encouragement to anyone involved in a similar labor of love.

“Crewing for an Ultrarun” is the ultimate resource for anyone thinking of assisting an ultra runner achieve their goal of running a long distance race. The author has crewed at numerous ultras (her husband has finished over 200 one-hundred miler ultras!) and has written a thorough, concise, easy to read guide that will help get your runner over the finish line. I’ve run over 100 ultras myself and I still learned a lot from the specific suggestions and Pro Tips… and the personal stories were fun to read. I would also recommend this book for Race Directors and volunteers to learn a different perspective of what is needed for a successful ultrarun. Great information!

Practical, thoughtful, and rooted in lived experience... a must-read for anyone stepping into a crewing role.

"Crewing for an Ultrarun: Start to Finish" cuts the guesswork and shows what support actually looks like when things get long, messy, or emotional. Sandra Smith writes with a steady hand, focusing on the parts of crewing most people don’t talk about: staying organized, reading your runner, adjusting on the fly, and keeping yourself steady when they’re hitting a low point.

It’s straightforward without drifting into technical jargon and encouraging without leaning into sentiment. A clear, honest guide for anyone who wants to understand the endurance world a little better or help someone go the distance.

It’s also full of practical tips and fun sidebars. I’ve already pulled several ideas into my own training for an upcoming ultra.
